Calling All Titans, the Logo Contest for the New Name Has Begun!

Katie Vastola, Abigail Ernst, and Abigail Fireison

As of July 1, 2021 T.C. Williams High School will be known as Alexandria City High School. With this name change comes a new logo as well. This new logo could be anywhere in the building, merchandise, sports uniform, or anywhere ACPS wants to put it.

Mr. Balas, the principal of T.C., has invited students to participate and submit new logo designs. However, only current ACPS students can submit artwork for the logo contest. The contest started on April 9 with the deadline for submission on through April 30 at 11:59 pm.

On May 7, the Superintendent’s School Logo Design Review Committee—which is composed of students, a School Board member, staff, alumni, and the community of ACPS—will finalize the options and narrow it down to the top three to five finalists. Later, on May 10, there will be a community poll that will be sent out, where the public can vote on these designs chosen by the committee. This poll will close at 11:59 pm on May 17, and the final decision will be made and announced in late May.

For those interested in submitting multiple, they can submit one or more per person or group as long as they are submitted individually. There is no fee to submit a logo design, but if your logo is chosen for the official design, there is no prize for winning, other than the sight of your logo representing your newly-named school.

The guidelines for the logo design consists of the following: the logo design has to be simple, and it must incorporate the school name in some shape or form. It can either be an abbreviation of the school’s name or fully spelled out. It must include the school colors, which are red, white, and blue. However, the logo design must also be able to work in black and white as well.

Artists can draw out the design digitally or on paper, but it must be submitted as a JPEG file. The design has to look presentable on large scale items, such as banners, and small scale items, specifically as small as 2cm x 2cm. Additionally, the logo must be suitable for all settings, especially professional ones. Lastly, the logo has to demonstrate the principles of ACPS, located in the ACPS Strategic Plan for 2025, and reflect Titan pride.

In addition to these rules, the contest also has terms and conditions; including that when a logo is submitted, the intellectual property and design of the logo becomes ACPS property. Moreover, the original logo design may be altered to fit all ACPS brand guidelines and standards.
