The Classics Move to Other Platforms

By Katie Vastola and Moira Sirois

As 2021 begins, some of the classic shows and movies are being taken off Netflix. While there are many shows and movies being removed from the platform, some of the more popular ones such as The Office, The Notebook, and Gossip Girl are going to be greatly missed. They are going to be transferred to other platforms, for example, Hulu.

The Notebook is being removed. It is about a young couple who find their way together but Allie’s (Rachel McAdams) parents do not approve of their relationship. They get torn apart when Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) serves in World War II. They assume their relationship is over until Noah comes back from war to South Carolina and sees Allie again. This movie was added to Netflix on July 18, 2020 and is leaving on December 31st, but can be streamed on Hulu.

Spider Man: Into the Spider Verse is about a teenager named Miles Morales who does not like his new boarding school. One night, he visits his uncle and they visit the subway, where Miles gets bitten by a radioactive spider and develops superpowers and becomes Spiderman. Later, he meets Peter B. Parker and realizes there’s many others who share his talents from different dimensions. He has to learn to control his powers before he can help his friends defeat the Kingpin so they can return to their own dimensions.

It is not certain where this movie will be available for streaming after it leaves Netflix, although it will likely be available on Disney Plus as other Marvel movies have gone there after leaving Netflix.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas is another classic being removed. The movie is about the Grinch who despises Christmas and the season. The joy and excitement from the Whos in Whoville have always been irritating to the Grinch. The season reminds him of his scaring childhood. He has a change of heart when he runs into Cindy Lou Who who reminds him of true happiness and the Grinch has a change of heart.

The movie is being taken off of Netflix on December 31st and will be found on Peacock instead. The animated version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas was also taken off of Netflix on December 4th.

Gossip Girl is a TV show being taken off. It is about the life of high schoolers on the upper east side of New York City who has lives submerged in drama. An anonymous website blasts gossip about the students to the world making scandals public.

Gossip Girl is being taken off of Netflix on December 31 and will be going to HBO’s new platform, HBO Max. There will be a reboot as well on the same platform with new actors. The reboot just started filming in November and the release date has been pushed to 2021 due to the pandemic.

The Office is a mockumentary about the lives of the co-workers at the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. The sitcom is the U.S. adaptation of the British show, although it was more successful than the British show. Jim, Pam, Michael, and Dwight are the main characters. The show follows their lives as well as the lives of everyone else they work with. It is getting removed from Netflix on December 31st and can be found on Peacock after that.
