The Titan Debate Team for this year includes Francisca Pitterle, Kate Griffis, Sophia Bassingthwaite, Zion Foulcard, Madison Enow, Maryam Niazi, and Angelina Martinez. Francisca Pitterle and Sylvia Rahim make up the varsity policy debate team for the school and will be competing in the nationals competition to represent our school. The topic for policy debate for this year is the resolution that the United States federal government should substantially increase its protection of water resources.

Sylvia Rahim has spent the longest on the debate team. She started to compete during her sophomore year and has continued competing through her senior year. She has enjoyed it ever since even though all of her competitions have been online due to COVID.

“I love having the opportunity to logically think out the best policies to help solve issues in the United States,” Rahim states. “I enjoy creating cases with my partner to prepare for the competitions because of all the new things we learn.”

Francisca Pitterle is a junior who joined the debate team her freshman year and started to compete in her sophomore year as well.

Pitterle states, “I really enjoy competing but I always get nervous beforehand. My nerves go away once the round starts though.”

Pitterle is the first affirmative speaker and second negative speaker while Rahim is the first negative speaker and second affirmative speaker for the competition. This means that Pitterle will explain and present their topic to the judges while Rahim will rebut the argument of Pitterle.

Pitterle states her excitement for nationals saying, “I am very excited to represent the school at Nationals. Nationals should be very fun and be a great challenge for our debate skills.”
