Migrating Your Blackboard Course

The transition to Canvas is a chance to clean out any clutter your courses may have accumulated over the years. If you become overwhelmed, don’t forget that we’re here to help! You can contact us at canvas@acps.k12.va.us.

You have two options: copy your entire course from Blackboard into Canvas or start fresh to build your Canvas course. Start by taking the Canvas Training Course for Instructors.

Option 1: Copy your entire Blackboard course into Canvas

  1. First review your Blackboard course and delete any unnecessary or outdated information.
  2. Export your Blackboard course.
  3. Import your course into Canvas.
  4. Most content will be imported into the Modules, Pages, and Files areas of your Canvas course. You will want to review and organize the information.
  5. Click Settings then Student View to see how students see your course. Disable any unnecessary menu items.
  6. You must publish your course before enrolled students are able to view it.

Option 2: Start fresh to build your Canvas course

  1. Download files from Blackboard onto your computer that you may want to use in Canvas.
  2. Be sure to post your syllabus, instructor information, and your welcome page.
  3. Canvas is intuitive. If you get stuck consult the Canvas Guides site.
  4. Compare Blackboard terminology to Canvas.
  5. Try using Modules to organize your content. They easily help you control the flow of your course.
