Two Schools Get $1,000 Awards for Encouraging Health and Wellness

The Marine Corp Marathon sponsor has donated $1,000 each to James K. Polk and George Mason Elementary Schools in recognition of their high levels of participation in last year’s Kid’s Run.

Polk had the highest number of participants in the Kids Run and has been an active supporter of the Marine Corp Marathon for several years. Goal 5 of the ACPS 2020 plan focuses on health and wellness of our students and ensuring that they are physically and mentally fit to learn.

We are always looking for ways to get our students moving and keep them active. We have a huge turn-out for walk-to-school each year along with a dance party and this Kids Run is just one more way to help keep our students healthy,” said James K. Polk Principal Pree Ann Johnson.

Polk had the largest participation of the five Virginia schools selected to receive the award with 341 students running the one-mile fun run.  George Mason brought 262 students to participate in the event with U.S. Marines, their parents and teachers cheering them on.

This award is an added bonus to helping our students meet our health and wellness goals. We are proud of their commitment,” George Mason Principal Brian Orrenmaa said.

Marine Corps Marathon Director Rick Nealis and Sodexo District Manager Terry Hardaway presented the Healthy School Awards to the principals during the School Board meeting on Thursday evening. The schools received the award and donation of $1,000 from the marathon’s sponsor, Sodexo.

The Marine Corp Marathon Kids Run was held in October 2016, the day before the 41st Marine Corps Marathon.
