Winners of the City Round of the Reflections Competition Announced

Judges have selected the Alexandria City PTA Reflections nominees to go forward to the Northern Virginia level of the national competition.

Fifty-five K-12 students who won first place in their categories at their schools advanced to the City level of the 2016-17 arts contest. Those who placed first at the City level advance to the Northern Virginia District PTA level to compete against winners from Fairfax and Arlington.

Each participating school held its own contest as part of this multi-level awards program. Students submitted more than 620 original works of art to their school contests based on the theme, “What Is Your Story?”

All participants will be honored at the Reflections Awards Program and Art Show Opening on Friday, March 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Durant Arts Center. The program will include the awards presentations, video screenings, live performances, and refreshments and will be free and open to the public. The Reflections art show, including all works entered into the Alexandria contest, will be on display through late May.

Alexandria Reflections winners will also be honored by Northern Virginia Community College at the annual Children’s Concert, to be held March 2 at Schlesinger Hall on the Alexandria Campus, 4915 E Campus Drive.

Art was accepted in six categories:

  • Dance Choreography
  • Film Production
  • Literature
  • Music Composition
  • Photography
  • Visual Arts

Expert judges chose the winners after evaluating the work in divisions based on grade level. Judges this year included former high-school and college music teachers, an artist who runs a community art center, a professional photographer, and a retired executive with Warner Brothers film studios. Only students who win first place awards at one level of the contest advance to the next level, from the individual school to Alexandria City, to Northern Virginia District, to the state, and finally, to the National PTA Reflections contest.

Reflections is a national PTA program that has been in existence since 1969.
