In a nail-biting finish, the ACHS freshmen girls crew team won the Virginia state championship by a mere 0.3 seconds on May 6 at Sandy Run Regional Park. This victory is a remarkable feat for the young rowers, who have shown exceptional grit and determination throughout the season.

The team competed against Thomas Jefferson, Yorktown, Washington Liberty, Mclean, and Wakefield high schools in the championship race. It was closely contested from start to finish, with the top two teams, Wakefield and Alexandria City, jostling for the lead in the water.

“When the official said, ‘event 33 women’s freshmen 8, 2nd place Wakefield…’ I didn’t have to hear the rest, I knew we won,” Ariana Escobar said.

“Wakefield, you are my favorite boat,” said Ruby Snyder
