ACPS is committed to recruiting, developing, supporting and retaining exemplary staff members that meet the needs of every student.
Our efforts in this area are assessed through Goal 3: An Exemplary Staff as part of the ACPS 2020 Strategic Plan, an update on which was presented to the School Board on December 14.
For the 2016-17 school year, ACPS met targets for filling full-time classroom positions by the first day of school, having student teachers placed in ACPS, improving beginning teacher salaries and growing staff participation in our wellness plan. ACPS saw a gain of 14 percent in hiring new teachers before June 30, leading to a strong start to the school year.
While teacher retention held steady at 85 percent, ACPS aims to grow teacher retention by implementing a new mentoring program for new teachers, offering tuition assistance for professional development and offering a National Board certification support program. And, ACPS will offer continued support for the Grow a Teacher program, which trains tomorrows teachers at our own T.C. Williams High School.

ACPS recognizes the importance of the development and support of principals. To that end, this year new principals and assistant principals participated in a new administrators’ orientation program. The major focus for our new administrators in this program is to understand what critical information is needed to become effective instructional leaders. These principals are then able to better support teachers and provide productive feedback that best meets the needs of our diverse student body.
ACPS is also implementing a leadership development plan with workshops focused on reinforcing a curriculum, promoting research-based and engaging instruction, implementing an effective formative assessment system, providing effective intervention systems that address the needs of our diverse student population and more.
