Happy faces all around as ACPS students, teachers and staff returned to school for five-day, in-person learning this week. The 2021-22 school year opened with students excited to see their teachers, staff and classmates face-to-face and to settle into their new classrooms.

Visiting all ACPS school campuses to begin the new school year, School Board Chair Meagan L. Alderton joined Superintendent Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr. in greeting students and welcoming them enthusiastically.

“You can see the smiles behind the masks,” Alderton said.

Dr. Hutchings urged everyone to strive to do their best and support each other as we begin the 2021-22 school year with a vision of great expectations for what our students will achieve academically and socially through SEAL (Social, Emotional, and Academic Learning) support.

At Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology, students said the best part about being back in the classroom is being alongside their peers. “I’m excited to see my friends again!” they exclaimed down the hallway.

“This is the best third grade class experience,” teachers at Charles Barrett Elementary School said. “Considering they’ve been out of the classroom for a long time, they’re following directions and being great listeners.”

Students entering Alexandria City High School were greeted by the school’s band and cheerleaders, among others who gave everyone a warm welcome on the big day.
