Learning in Quarantine and Reporting a Positive COVID-19 Test Result

- ACPS

ACPS has health and safety mitigation measures in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 within the school division. It also has a plan for any students who need to isolate as they have been diagnosed with COVID-19, as well as students who need to quarantine as they have been identified as close contacts of someone with COVID-19.

The isolation period is 10 days long for individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19. The quarantine period for individuals identified as close contacts is 14 days. Fully-vaccinated individuals who are not experiencing symptoms and individuals who have had COVID-19 within the last 90 days are exempt from quarantine requirements so long as they are symptom-free.

ACPS will use live streaming for students who need to quarantine. Live streaming allows students to view their teacher providing instruction in the school classroom in real-time.

  • The teacher will only be broadcasting the live stream to quarantined students.
  • The teacher will not be interacting with students who are live streaming the class.

Students will be expected to log in to Clever/Canvas while quarantining as attendance is counted. Students must check Canvas for daily assignments (or the Clever Teacher Page for K-1) and attend their teacher’s office hours.

During teacher office hours, quarantined students will have an opportunity to interact with their teacher and ask questions. Office hours are established by the teacher. Office hours are a time for teachers and quarantining students to:

  • Connect/check-in
  • Clarify assignments
  • Ask and answer questions
  • Provide feedback
  • Discuss grades
  • Clarify current and missing assignments
  • Spend 20-45 minutes together, depending on the student’s grade level

Note: The teacher does not reteach during office hours.

Additional support sessions will be provided via Zoom, as needed. Teachers will dedicate some instructional time to familiarize students with the specific devices and applications they will be using (Clever, Canvas, etc.), whether at home or school.

See the Back to School Guide/Learning in Quarantine Situations, also described below:

In a student quarantine situation:

  • The student will learn by accessing the teacher live streaming the class. Students will need to log in to Zoom. Students will live stream their classes and check Canvas (2-12) or the Clever Teacher Page (K-1) for daily assignments.
  • Students will attend office hours with their teacher.
  • Teachers will make the Zoom link available in Canvas.
  • In Clever, teachers will place the link on the Clever Teacher page.
  • Students in grades 6-12 have 24-hour access to free tutoring through Tutor.com.
  • To access tutoring, students log in to Canvas and click “Online Tutoring” in the course menu inside of their classes.

In a half-classroom quarantine situation:

  • The teacher live streams the class. Students need to log in to Zoom and live stream classes and check Canvas (2-12) or the Clever Teacher Page (K-1) for daily assignments.
  • Students attend office hours with their teacher.
  • Students in grades 6-12 can access Tutor.com for free tutoring.
  • Teachers will set up a Zoom meeting room for live streams. (The live stream will be recorded when a child is sick and cannot attend the session).

In a full-classroom quarantine situation:

  • The class switches to virtual instruction and checks Canvas (2-12) or the Clever Teacher Page (K-1) for daily assignments.
  • Teachers will set up a Zoom meeting room for virtual instruction.
  • Students attend office hours with their teacher.
  • Students in grades 6-12 have 24-hour access to free tutoring through Tutor.com.

If a teacher is in a quarantine situation:

  • Students will be in class with a substitute teacher or classroom monitor. The regular classroom teacher, if asymptomatic, will be teaching the class virtually.
  • The classroom teacher will set up a Zoom meeting room for virtual instruction.
  • The classroom teacher will update Canvas (2-12) or the Clever Teacher Page (K-1) with daily assignments and activities.

If it is a school quarantine situation

  • The school will have students switch to virtual instruction and check Canvas (2-12) or the Clever Teacher Page (K-1) with daily assignments and activities.
  • The classroom teachers will set up a Zoom meeting room for virtual instruction.
