The T.C. Williams High School crew team brought home two silver medals from the 72nd Annual Canadian Secondary Schools Championships in St. Catharines, Ontario last weekend.
The Senior Women’s Light Doubles boat and the Senior Women Eight boat both brought home silver during the final race in the tournament that hosted over 100 schools. The regatta was the last tournament the Titans will compete in this season.
The Titans Women’s Light Doubles boat, rowed by seniors Cecilia Fernandez and Lauren Kelly, is the first women’s boat at T.C. Williams to medal at all four championship regattas in sculling, which is using two oars per person rather than one during competitions.
Fernandez and Kelly won gold medals at the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association Championships, followed by silver medal wins for three weekends in a row at Stotesbury, PA on May 19-20 and Scholastic Rowing Association of America in Cherry Hill, NJ from May 26-27.
Fernandez and Kelly are longtime friends and extremely talented. They excel both academically and athletically. Both received scholarships and will continue to row in their college careers. The pair transitioned to sculling in the past year and have made enormous headway in this particular kind of rowing,” said head coach Pat Marquardt.
The Senior Women Eight boat, was replaced by the top Sophomores and Juniors from the team because of a clash with Senior prom the same weekend. This was the first time the Women Eight boat rowed with underclassmen and with the particular boat lineup and miraculously placed silver.
Both boats are coached by Shannon Hoff, a first-grade Special Education teacher at Mount Vernon Community School. She just started this year at T.C. Williams as a coach. She made the transition easily because of her experience in sculling.
The Titans ended its season on June 6 with an awards ceremony for the rowers.
