Jefferson-Houston Now an International Baccalaureate (I.B.) Middle Years Programme School

Congratulations to Jefferson-Houston School for becoming an authorized International Baccalaureate (I.B.) World School for the five-year Middle Years Programme (MYP).

This achievement is the culmination of a years-long effort by Jefferson-Houston and ACPS leadership to add the MYP, the companion of the Primary Years Programme (PYP), which was implemented at Jefferson-Houston in 2015.

We are really excited to implement the Middle Years Program at Jefferson-Houston. The challenging framework of the program encourages students to draw connections between what they are learning in the classroom and the real world beyond the walls of this school. The impact of the I.B. program will reverberate throughout the community and the world as the students graduate and move on to engage in activities that enhance our social, cultural and economic environments. We value the opportunity to be a part of the process through the I.B. program,” said Jefferson-Houston Principal Chris Phillips.

As an I.B. World School, Jefferson-Houston is part of a global community of schools committed to developing knowledgeable, caring young people who will be ready to successfully negotiate their futures and make meaningful contributions to an increasingly global society.

The program supports the development of knowledgeable and inquiring students who are encouraged to think independently and drive their own learning. These students are able to engage with people in an increasingly globalized, rapidly changing world.

The program also has many benefits for staff. It supports the development of effective and collaborative professional learning communities and provides access to a worldwide network of highly respected I.B. World Schools working together to share best practices. As part of the implementation process, school leaders and teachers must attend professional development workshops with a focus on the I.B. philosophy and implementation, delivery of the I.B. program and building on and enhancing professional development portfolios.
