ACPS Meets ACPS 2020 Targets Aimed at Fostering an Exemplary Staff, But Requires More Work on Community Engagement

ACPS met, improved upon or remained consistent across 91 percent of all targets for Goal 3: An Exemplary Staff set for the first year of the ACPS 2020 Strategic Plan, according to data released on Thursday. One of three goals under the Family and Community Engagement goals for the ACPS 2020 Strategic Plan was met.

Data for Goal 2: Family and Community Engagement and Goal 3: An Exemplary staff were released to establish benchmarks and assess which areas require focus. The results of all five years will be charted on an ACPS 2020 Dashboard over the next four years.

Key Performance Indicators showed that 91 percent of all targets were met across all areas for Goal 3 and in many cases, performance exceeded the targets set. In the one area where the target was not met – the hiring of new teachers prior to June 30 – there was an 11 percentage point increase from the previous year.

The results indicate that ACPS is on track in its goal of fulfilling its mission of ensuring ACPS recruits, develops, supports and retains quality teachers and staff who meet the needs of every student.

“Good teachers and highly qualified professional staff are the keystone of a high performing school division. We want to be able to continue to attract and keep excellent staff who meet the needs of our diverse student body and continue to develop once on board,” said Chief Human Resources Officer Joseph Makolandra.

In the coming year, ACPS will focus on increasing staff wellness initiatives and focus on the importance of feedback through the evaluation process and recruiting staff early to sustain growth in this goal area.

Under Goal 2: Family and Community Engagement, the Family and Community Engagement Center (FACE) will focus on raising the rate of positive feedback around FACE sessions and increasing the numbers who participate. The majority of Key Performance Indicators in Goal 2 had their baselines established during 2015-16 through the Family and Community Survey that was distributed in May. The progress in these areas will begin to be measured in next year’s data

In the coming year, work around community engagement will focus on collaborating with parent liaisons to establish relationships and ensure ACPS families feel welcome and comfortable attending community meetings and events, while maintaining transparent, open communications around areas such as modernization, redistricting, instruction and discipline. The work will also focus on building relationships with community groups and key members of the Alexandria community.
