A course teaching adults how to respond to youths in crisis is being offered through the City of Alexandria.

The Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course is offered on May 17 and 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

This training demonstrates the initial help needed for a person showing signs of mental illness or a mental health crisis. The eight-hour course teaches risk factors, warning signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use disorders, the effects of the illnesses and an overview of treatments, and a five-step action plan for helping someone with symptoms. Each session is two four-hour classes.

Registration is open until filled and is limited to 20 participants per class. Attendees of the full eight-hour course will receive a three-year certification in Mental Health First Aid.

This training is designed to help paraprofessionals and liaisons provide support until an individual is linked to professional resources. It does not prepare someone to diagnose or provide treatment. MHFA is not recommended for licensed mental health providers.
