Important Changes from the Virginia Department of Education

As of July 1, 2018 the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has made changes to the licensing process. The VDOE is now issuing 10-year renewable licenses. Stay tuned for additional information once the VDOE has finalized the requirements. The VDOE has also eliminated the requirements for Technology Standards for Instructional Personnel (TSIP) for teachers seeking initial licensure or renewal of a license.

Effective January 1, 2019 the VDOE has announced a fee increase. Learn more about the increase, the first since 1996.

Important Deadlines

If you plan to renew your license, please mark your calendar with these important dates:

  • Teachers who meet the requirements must submit salary improvement application packets to Human Resources by February 28, 2019.
  • Educators with licenses expiring June 2019 must submit completed VDOE renewal packets and/or all final requirements for VDOE provisional licenses to Human Resources by May 1, 2019.

Teachers who hold a Virginia Department of Health Professions license (nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, etc.) that was renewed this year or will expire within the next few months, must submit a copy of the updated license to Human Resources.
