Project GLAD® (Guided Language Acquisition Design) is an effective instructional model for teaching English language development (ELD) and literacy. The award-winning model is based on the extensive research-base of second language acquisition, brain research and effective literacy practices for second language learners. GLAD is a standards-based ELD instructional model that promotes high levels of academic language and achievement for students at all levels of English proficiency.

ACPS is offering two summer opportunities to get to know Project GLAD if you are new to the model or if you are a practitioner wanting to refine your GLAD practice.

Do you want a one-day introduction?

ACPS is hosting its first ever Project GLAD Summer Institute this August.

Join us for a day of learning, collaborating, and fun with Project GLAD. There will be a variety of sessions offered so that you can choose what sounds right for you. Do you want to learn about how to create a sentence pattern chart or do you want to dive into a planning document created for Project GLAD and co-teaching? Maybe you want to participate in a discussion on how Project GLAD and AVID have similar goals, or plan lessons using GLAD strategies with a trainer there to coach you along the way? There will be something for everyone at the Project GLAD Summer Institute.

Project GLAD incorporates strategies that align with best practices for English Learners. These strategies support teachers in how to scaffold the grade level curriculum for all students.

Currently, there are more than 250 GLAD trained teachers in ACPS with more than 150 slated to participate next year. Six schools are committed to using GLAD strategies to reach and teach all academic language learners. There are two OCDE Project GLAD certified trainers and 10 more Trainers in Training currently serving ACPS.

Feel like you need more than just a day?

The OCDE Project GLAD model of professional learning includes a 2-day research and theory workshop and a 4-day classroom demonstration where teachers see all the GLAD strategies in action with students. Project GLAD strategies are broken down into the six component areas of Focus and Motivation, Input, Guided Oral Practice, Reading and Writing, Extended Activities and Assessment and Feedback. This research-based model is focused on providing ways for students to access grade-level academic content and language while engaging in a positive classroom environment where they are encouraged to take risks. That’s where the learning happens.
