Jefferson-Houston Receives Prestigious National Recognition for Counseling

Jefferson-Houston has been designated a ‘Model Program’ by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA).

The school is one of only several hundred schools in the U.S. to receive the designation. Its program was recognized for its commitment to delivering a comprehensive, data-driven school counseling program and an exemplary educational environment in line with the goals of the ACPS 2020 Strategic Plan. Jefferson-Houston joins Francis C. Hammond, which received the Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) designation earlier this year and George Washington Middle School, which was the first ACPS school to receive the national designation in 2016.

Susan Russo, Jefferson-Houston’s school counselor was recognized in a School Counselor Spotlight during National Counseling week earlier this year.

Mrs. Russo is an outstanding school counselor and model counselor for all. She strives to ensure all students are progressing academically, emotionally and socially at Jefferson-Houston. We are grateful for her commitment to the students, staff and community,” said Jefferson-Houston Principal Chris Phillips.

Russo has been with ACPS for more than a decade. She spent her first five years at George Washington Middle School before joining Jefferson-Houston, where she is in her sixth year.

This year’s RAMP honorees have shown their commitment to students and the school counseling profession. These schools used data to drive their program development and implementation so all students can achieve success. RAMP designation
distinguishes these schools and encourages school counselors nationwide to strive for excellence,” said Jill Cook, ASCA assistant
director.

All RAMP schools will be honored at a recognition ceremony at ASCA’s annual conference in July for making an exemplary commitment to comprehensive school counseling programs.
