The Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) has designated the month of March as VSBA Equity in Education Month. As VSBA continues its work to ensure all students receive the necessary support to achieve positive academic outcomes, so does Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) as stated in our 2025: Equity for All Strategic Plan.

In this month’s “Unapologetic Talk with the Supe” episode, ACPS Superintendent Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr. speaks with civil rights icon Joan Trumpauer Mulholland and her son Loki Mulholland, an Emmy-winning filmmaker, author and activist. Dr. Hutchings takes a deep dive into Joan’s experiences in the historic civil rights movement and how those events shaped her life’s mission of fighting to end racism in the U.S.

Joan participated in more than 50 sit-ins and demonstrations by the time she was 23 years old. She was a Freedom Rider as well as a participant in the Jackson Woolworth’s Sit-in, the March on Washington, the Meredith March and the Selma to Montgomery March. She is also the first official white member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Loki Mulholland’s work has received over 40 Telly Awards and his films on race and social justice issues have won 16 best documentary awards.

Each month, the superintendent engages with leading advocates for equity as they unpack the challenges and opportunities which will guide us towards an antiracist society and racial equity in education. Tune in on the Superintendent’s Podcast webpage or SoundCloud and join the conversation on social media using the hashtags #UnapologeticTalkWithTheSupe, #antiracism and #ACPS.
