Measuring What Matters: Beyond Standardized Testing

A message from Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr., Superintendent of Schools

As you know, the Virginia Department of Education has just released their 2019 Virginia Standards of Learning data. We are encouraged by our progress in math but we also know that we still have much work left to do.

It is important for us to acknowledge that there is more than one data point to measuring the success of our students. We don’t want you to think that test data is not important. Test data allows us to make informed educational decisions. But we also need to look beyond test data to measure the academic growth of our students. In ACPS, in addition to state assessments, we also determine how our students are performing in and out of the classroom.

In Measuring What Matters, we give you a glimpse of what we do beyond testing to make sure every student goes on to be a highly valued member of our community who contributes to the City of Alexandria and beyond.

On behalf of ACPS, I want to personally thank you for your continued support and for sharing our commitment to making ACPS the best it has ever been.

Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr.
Superintendent of Schools
