- News and Announcements

Correction July 11, 11:25 a.m.: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that the Alexandria City School Board approved the educational specifications for future high schools. At the July 5, 2016 meeting, ACPS staff presented draft high school educational specifications to the School Board, however the Board requested that they be developed further. Staff will present a revised version of these specifications to the Board at a future date.

The Alexandria City School Board has voted to approve the educational specifications for pre-K centers. These specifications will be used to inform the focus of future resources and future building projects. Development of the pre-K educational specifications are part of Phase Two of the Long Range Educational Facilities Plan. An Educational Specification is the guiding document used for capital improvement planning that describes the proposed outcomes of a school modernization or new construction project.

The educational specifications for pre-K centers are aligned with ACPS’ characteristics of high performing schools as well as the ACPS 2020 Strategic Plan. They focus on academic excellence, community involvement and the creation of optimal learning environments in line with best practices.

Pre-K Center Educational Specifications include a capacity range of 320 to 400 students, 20 classroom spaces, multi-purpose rooms, community playgroup space and easily accessible playgrounds.

The Long Range Educational Facilities Plan is a collaborative and iterative process involving City staff, the Alexandria City School Board, City Council and community groups.
