- ACPS

As we continue planning Summer Learning for the 2021-22 school year, we are asking ACPS staff to review the information provided and complete our Summer Learning Staff Interest Survey by Sunday, April 24, 2022, as to whether or not you would like to support our students this summer with fun and engaging STEM programs. If you already know that you are interested in applying for summer learning, staff can access the ACPS online 2022 Summer School Application at 2022 Summer School Application. The Department of Human Resources sent staff email messages with more information on April 4 and April 20, 2022. Questions regarding the application process may be directed to acps.recruit@acps.k12.va.us.

This year, summer learning will consist of four weeks of in-person learning and two weeks of virtual learning for invited students in grades K-4. At both elementary and middle schools, curricula come ready to implement on the first day with scripted lessons and all materials.

“Summer Learning this year will look different from past years, given the fun and inventive programs that will be used for the elementary school and middle school levels,” said ACPS Summer Learning Coordinator Lisa Burnham.

PreK students will focus on Exploring Our Five Senses. Current elementary school students in grades K-4 will focus on STEAM learning using the Camp Invention curriculum. Students will gain confidence and persistence, build their STEM skills and improve their reading skills through collaborative, creative, problem-solving activities. More details about the fun activities teachers will facilitate—Robotic Aquatics, Marble Arcade and The Attic—are available online.

Current students in grades 5-8 will have a theme this year of Career Exploration Camp using hands-on, project-based Engineering is Everywhere modules. Students will be immersed in the following career oriented projects: Here Comes the Sun: Engineering Insulated Homes; Outbreak Alert: Engineering a Pandemic Response; Shake Things Up: Engineering Earthquake Resistant Buildings; and Sky’s the Limit: Engineering Flying Technologies.

High school summer in-person learning is only for students needing credit recovery courses. New credit courses will be taught through an online vendor. Current students in grades 8-11 can register for new credit classes with their school counselors.
