17 Teachers Achieve the Profession’s Highest Accomplishment

- Kudos to Staff, News and Announcements

Last Thursday, ACPS celebrated a record number of teachers who have received or renewed their National Board Certification — 17 in total! Twelve teachers are newly certified and five have renewed their certifications this year.

Three schools had multiple teachers achieve the teaching profession’s highest mark of accomplishment: James K. Polk Elementary School and Francis C. Hammond Middle School’s International Academy each had four, while T.C. Williams, including the Satellite Campus, had seven.

National Board Certification is a voluntary, teacher-driven professional learning process from the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. The qualification supports teachers in developing and demonstrating the advanced knowledge, skills and practices required of an outstanding educator.

“To achieve National Board Certification requires a high level of dedication and commitment to the teaching profession. We are so proud to celebrate the large number of teachers who successfully completed this intense and rigorous program, which ultimately benefits our students in the classroom,” said Interim Superintendent Dr. Lois F. Berlin.

Higher standards for teachers means better learning for students. ACPS is committed to developing an exemplary staff and ensuring that there is a highly effective teacher in every classroom, ACPS provides on-going support to teachers who pursue National Board Certification. ACPS now has 74 National Board Certified teachers and counselors on staff.

The teachers were celebrated at a reception on Thursday evening and recognized at the School Board meeting the same night.
