We comment precariously on these decisions, but as a part of the school community, we want to represent the interests of our school population as much as possible. Thus, we, the Theogony Editorial Board, voice our support for Mr. Alexander Duncan as the best selection for Executive Principal at ACHS.

While we hold that Dr. Marcia Rice would be a satisfactory choice, Duncan is an exceptional candidate who brings to the role essential skills, background and experience. We believe Duncan has expertise in the school system that cannot be replicated, a proven commitment to students, a keen focus on safety and the determination to build a school community. In particular, we find Duncan’s history of including student perspectives in his decision-making process as paramount in maintaining not only our role within the school but also the crucial ethic that his predecessor, Mr. Peter Balas, established.

Experience and Insight:

Duncan has previously worked as an ACPS English teacher, assistant principal, and campus administrator for Minnie Howard, according to statements made in his meet and greet webinar. This tenure has certainly granted him valuable insight into the inner workings of our district, allowing him to fully recognize and appreciate ACPS’s values and the unique dynamics that define our community. This gives Duncan an advantageous position in leading our school effectively, and collaboration with those at all levels will be easier with the relationships Duncan has already established. Additionally, Duncan’s deep knowledge of the Minnie Howard Campus will be of tremendous benefit once the new campus opens in 2024. This is not to say that Rice cannot effectively lead the High School Project, but rather to acknowledge that Duncan’s direct hand in ACPS as an in-house applicant allows him comparative advantage in making informed decisions with students, teachers and staff in mind.

Student Involvement:

Duncan excels in involving student input in decision-making processes. At the Minnie Howard Campus, Duncan has championed student involvement and leadership. In his meet and greet, Duncan said he “met regularly” with his Student Government Association leadership team in order to “stay informed about [its] needs” and “design a program that could meet those needs.” We believe that this quality is lacking within ACPS leadership and will become even more scant with Balas’s departure, considering being receptive was undoubtedly one of his best traits. Under Duncan’s leadership, ACHS can universally continue this precedent, which serves as a needed step forward in the district.

Commitment to Safety:

We believe that addressing the root causes of security issues instead of relying on band-aid responses is crucial, and Duncan has shown he is fully willing to do this. In his meet greet, Duncan said he had implemented “policies, practices [and] expectations” as campus administrator that “impact and incentivize positive behaviors.” The Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program is an example he mentioned. Duncan’s proactive attitude and experience equip him with the tools needed to promptly address and monitor security concerns.

Building Community:

Community appears to be at the heart of Duncan’s vision for ACHS, and this is something we believe is of utmost importance. In his meet and greet, Duncan described improving relationships within the school and creating a sense of belonging as a “first step” in his plans as executive principal. He clearly recognizes the importance of cultivating an inclusive and supportive environment. With this vital focus, Duncan will forge bonds that extend past the classroom and create an atmosphere where every student and staff member feels valued and supported.

After taking into consideration Duncan’s extensive experience, dedication to student input, devotion to maintaining safety and emphasis on community-building, we endorse him for the position of executive principal. Duncan has a proven track record, and will lead our school into a successful and bright future. We believe that Duncan will foster an environment in which students feel uplifted and empowered; it will not only enable us to continue our work on Theogony, but allow ACPS to syncretically strive for improvement, renewal, equity and excellence on all levels.

Editorials represent the opinion of the majority of the editorial board.

The responsibility of a journalist is to chronicle the truth in its many facets with as much diligence, thought and care as possible.
