{"id":2207,"date":"2022-05-30T15:17:26","date_gmt":"2022-05-30T15:17:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/theogony\/2021-2022\/?p=2207"},"modified":"2022-06-01T15:17:10","modified_gmt":"2022-06-01T15:17:10","slug":"five-achs-students-honored","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/theogony\/2021-2022\/2022\/05\/30\/five-achs-students-honored\/","title":{"rendered":"Five ACHS Students Honored"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Nora Malone<\/p><p><\/p><cite>Editor<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>On Wednesday, May 4, five Alexandria City High School students were honored by the C-SPAN Student Cam Documentary Competition presented by Comcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ACHS got honorable mention in both 2022 and 2021 and due to the pandemic, the 2021 honorees did not receive their certificates. So the celebration, hosted by Gryphon Magnus, celebrated both groups<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2021 group consisted of Helen Russell, Alison Avelar, and Elena Gutierrez, their documentary \u2018Dear Mr. President\u2019 discussed the removal of statues and monuments to racist people and things in the format of directly addressing incoming president Joe Biden. It included an interview with Mayor Justin Wilson and information about the name change of both Alexandria City High School and Mathew Maury elementary school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of the previous winners connected the topics back to their hometown,\u201d said Russell, \u201cAnd since our school was being renamed it was kind of a perfect kismet opportunity to connect our hometown to the presidential administration that was coming in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year&#8217;s honorees were Mia Mervis and Lucy Savarie whose documentary \u2018One Stamp at a Time\u2019 discussed food stamps and how they changed during COVID-19.
