Nolan\u2019s World War II epic, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dunkirk<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, follows British and French forces as they evacuate the beaches of Northern France. Cornered in the English Channel by Nazi Germany, Allied troops must wait for the British Navy and civilian boats to rescue them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film walks a different path than most war movies; it shows the pauses in action. \u00a0Nolan uses the silence to create suspense to show that war is more than gory battles and heroic speeches. \u00a0Unlike Steven Spielberg&#8217;s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saving Private Ryan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which won numerous Academy Awards and Golden Globe awards in 1999,\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dunkirk<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is able to show the same amount of warfare, without the gore, the same amount of human connection between soldiers, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> step away from tugging on our hearts. \u00a0One of the few criticisms <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saving Private Ryan <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and HBO mini series <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Band of Brothers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;a story about an American regiment at the end of WWII&#8211;received was that it was too emotional or too \u201cHollywood.\u201d \u00a0Nolan must feel the same way because there is nearly no sentiment in the picture. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, the silence heard throughout the movie is also a result of the dialogue, or lack thereof. \u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dunkirk<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a film about violence, terror, and the human psyche. \u00a0So, Nolan uses the lack of speech and sheer violence to show audiences how terrifying war is and how it affects a soldier\u2019s personality; as William T. Sherman, Union Army general during the Civil War, once said, \u201cWar is hell.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another aspect of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dunkirk <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that separates it from Nolan\u2019s other films&#8211;such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inception<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dark Knight<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interstellar&#8211;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is that it\u2019s a true story, so there is very little creative freedom in the events. \u00a0However, the story does allow the narrator, in this case Nolan, to tell it in a unique way. \u00a0Nolan decided to tell the remarkable epic in three phases: the land (lasting a week), the sea (lasting a day), and the air (lasting an hour). \u00a0\u201cThe land\u201d followed a young British soldier, Tommy, in his attempt to get off the beaches of Dunkirk, France. \u00a0\u201cThe sea\u201d detailed a civilian boat called upon by the British Navy to rescue soldiers across the English Channel and \u201cthe air\u201d told of two British fighter pilots defending ground troops from the German air force. \u00a0The unique format of the film, while sometimes Gordian, actually is a nod to the three main theaters of war. \u00a0The complexity of the story is also a reminder of how intricate war really is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christopher Nolan\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dunkirk <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a monumental achievement for future war films, but much more importantly for Hollywood and the movie industry. \u00a0In recent years, companies such as Netflix and Hulu have become increasingly important and powerful forces in movie and television show production. \u00a0Many of the industry\u2019s top movies and shows in recent years have been created by non-Hollywood organizations. \u00a0But Nolan\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dunkirk<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helps reestablish Hollywood as the premier place for movie making and gives audiences a masterful approach to combat and human sacrifice.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By John Arnold Nineteen years after releasing his first film, Following, Christopher Nolan produced his most complete picture yet.
