Cultural competence is the ability to successfully teach students who come from cultures other than our own. The seamless use of competencies results in equity\u2014the knowledge required to provide what each student needs in order to succeed.<\/p>\n
The concept of equity is uniquely embedded in each of the ACPS 2020 Strategic Plan<\/a> goals.\u00a0 As part of our commitment to these goals, these professional training opportunities enable our educators to learn more about cultural competency and how to integrate it into everyday teaching and learning interactions in order to ensure Every Student Succeeds.<\/p>\n Quarterly Educator’s Roundtable Discussion<\/strong> Engage in a lively and rich discussion about the current state of equity work in ACPS and why cultural competencies are vital to the work we do in schools. Learn how this knowledge can empower you to work more effectively with colleagues,\u00a0 students and families. This is the first in a series of quarterly round table discussions.<\/p>\n Light refreshments will be served.<\/p>\n Reaching and Teaching\u00a0 Students Experiencing Poverty<\/strong> Featuring guest presenter Paul Gorski, author educator and founder of\u00a0 Ed.change.org<\/a>, this two-part series will shed light on what it means to be poor or working-class, challenge many of the myths about poverty and provide useful strategies for erasing opportunity gaps.<\/p>\n Participants who attend both sessions will receive a copy of the author’s book, “Reaching and Teaching Students in Poverty: Strategies for Erasing the Opportunity Gap.”<\/p>\n Light refreshments will be served.<\/p>\n
