The program aims to break down the social divide between students who have and those who do not by providing a free healthy breakfast for every student in every classroom.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7722 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/4breakfast_web--800x429.jpg\" alt=\"Kids having breakfast in the classroom at Cora Kelly\" width=\"635\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/4breakfast_web--800x429.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/4breakfast_web--186x100.jpg 186w, https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/4breakfast_web--260x140.jpg 260w, https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/4breakfast_web--768x412.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/4breakfast_web-.jpg 1872w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Until now, students have divided as soon as they got off the bus, with students on free and reduced school meals heading to the cafeteria to eat breakfast while those who have eaten breakfast at home go to classrooms or other designated locations. Breakfast in the Classroom removes the stigma that can be associated with receiving free and reduced meals that results in some kids skipping meals. Now, students all students eat breakfast with their\u00a0peers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-7721 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/breakfast1_web-2-1-800x429.jpg\" alt=\"Kids having breakfast in the classroom at Cora Kelly\" width=\"635\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/breakfast1_web-2-1-800x429.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/breakfast1_web-2-1-186x100.jpg 186w, https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/breakfast1_web-2-1-260x140.jpg 260w, https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/breakfast1_web-2-1-768x412.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Cora Kelly program was made possible by $20,000 in grant funding from INOVA Foundation and No Kid Hungry. About 55 percent of Cora Kelly students participate in breakfast while nearly 91 percent are eligible for free and reduced meals. This program will bring participation to nearly 100 percent.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7718\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/breakfast-in-the-classroom-2-260x174.jpg\" alt=\"Middle school student reaching in bag for breakfast in the classroom item\" width=\"317\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/breakfast-in-the-classroom-2-260x174.jpg 260w, https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/breakfast-in-the-classroom-2-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/breakfast-in-the-classroom-2.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 317px) 100vw, 317px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Last spring, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/Domain\/9\">Francis C. Hammond Middle School<\/a>, the first secondary school to implement\u00a0the program,\u00a0was named a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/?p=5671\">winner in the Virginia Breakfast Challenge<\/a> and received a $4,000 grant for technology enhancements, field trips and playground equipment. The school also received a start-up grant from Partners for Breakfast in the Classroom for $149,000.00 to purchase equipment for their breakfast program. Hammond\u00a0has seen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/?p=5281\">tremendous results,<\/a> including\u00a0a decrease in tardiness and absenteeism along with calmer and more focused classrooms since it began offering Breakfast in the Classroom in 2016.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/Domain\/23\">William Ramsay Elementary School<\/a> was the first to implement the Breakfast in the Classroom, followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/Domain\/14\">Patrick Henry Elementary School<\/a>, then Hammond.
