{"id":15863,"date":"2020-02-17T20:00:17","date_gmt":"2020-02-18T01:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/?p=15863"},"modified":"2020-02-14T16:14:32","modified_gmt":"2020-02-14T21:14:32","slug":"william-ramsay-elementary-school-applauded-for-improving-science-results","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/?p=15863","title":{"rendered":"William Ramsay Elementary School Applauded for Improving Science Results"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The Virginia Mathematics and Science Coalition has honored William Ramsay Elementary School with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vamsc.org\/index.php\/programs-that-work\/\">Programs That Work<\/a> award.<\/p>\n<p>The school received the recognition after designing and implementing customized instruction for fifth grade students in the Science\/ELA intervention program.<\/p>\n<p>The non-profit was impressed by benchmark and SOL data that showed significant improvement following the introduction of the initiative.<\/p>\n<p>Principal Michael Routhouska said,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We are happy to hear that the hard work of staff and students has been recognized by the <i>Programs That Work<\/i> award. William Ramsay&#8217;s fifth grade Science Intervention\/Enrichment program, which provides students science-based small group instruction designed for students&#8217; interests and academic needs, is making a great impact.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Each year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vamsc.org\/\">Virginia Mathematics &amp; Science Coalition<\/a> recognizes exemplary student and teacher strategies that have a measurable impact on learning.<\/p>\n<p>Award winners are evaluated by the extent to which their program innovates and has effect, is able to demonstrate the importance of science concept skills, and can show a measurable impact on teaching and learning.<\/p>\n<p>The Science I\/E program created by William Ramsay was designed to accomplish many diverse goals, all within a single 30-minute intervention block:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide small-group reading intervention for students reading below grade level, using science-based texts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Support EL students with targeted vocabulary acquisition strategies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Reteach fourth grade science to fifth grade students with gap areas<\/li>\n<li>Enrich students (including TAG) who have already demonstrated mastery of a specific science topic. <i>\u00a0<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ramsay teachers regularly meet to assign students to these data-driven science interventions based on criteria that includes test performance on fourth grade science standards along with reading levels and other proficiency tests.<\/p>\n<p>Erica Meili, ACPS Science Instructional Specialist for Title I Schools, said, \u201cThe work William Ramsay teachers have done around science is remarkable and this award is truly deserved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The school\u2019s work will be showcased by the non-profit at an event in Richmond.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Stay tuned for more coverage of this award-winning program in the coming weeks.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A program tailored to each individual student is reaping rewards.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":15873,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1,62,18],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-15863","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-acps","category-awards","category-ramsay"],"publishpress_future_action":{"enabled":false,"date":"2026-04-21 10:49:36","action":"change-status","newStatus":"draft","terms":[],"taxonomy":"category","extraData":[]},"publishpress_future_workflow_manual_trigger":{"enabledWorkflows":[]},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/15863","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/12"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=15863"}],"version-history":[{"count":7,"href":"https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/15863\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":15883,"href":"https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/15863\/revisions\/15883"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media\/15873"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=15863"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=15863"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=15863"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
