To keep up with changes in laws affecting education, however, many of them are revised more frequently. In the last two years, the School Board approved nearly 100 policy changes, and this year more than 100 are scheduled for review. To support equity throughout ACPS, <b>the Board has also begun translating its policies into Spanish, Amharic and Arabic.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/policy\">Find the School Board policies online.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Below are some recent policy changes that are important to know about:<\/p>\n<p><b>Recess Time and Outdoor Weather Conditions<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Elementary students have more recess time than in past years thanks to student wellness policy changes, which also created guidelines for when to hold recess and other outdoor activities during adverse weather conditions.<\/p>\n<p>All students from pre-kindergarten through grade five now have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>30 minutes of recess per day<\/li>\n<li>60 to 90 minutes of physical education instruction per week, and<\/li>\n<li>15 minutes per day of \u201cactive learning\u201d time, when movement is incorporated with academic learning in the classroom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>ACPS also created a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/weather\">weather web page<\/a><\/b> where you can check the current outdoor conditions and find helpful charts on holding recess and outdoor activities during inclement weather.<\/p>\n<p>For the full details, read the policy and regulation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/cms\/lib\/VA01918616\/Centricity\/Shared\/documents\/school-board-policies\/jhcf.pdf\">Policy JHCF: Student Wellness (PDF)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/cms\/lib\/VA01918616\/Centricity\/Shared\/documents\/school-board-policies\/jhcf-r.pdf\">Regulation JHCF-R: Wellness Guidelines for the Alexandria City Public Schools (PDF)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Student Walk Zones<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The walk zone for high school students was changed from a 1.5 mile radius around the school to a 1.5 mile walking distance from the school. This change was made so that avoiding hazardous areas wouldn\u2019t result in students actually walking more than 1.5 miles to school. Do you know a middle or high school student who is interested in leadership and governance? If so, they can apply to become a Student Representative to the School Board!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/domain\/1242\">Find more information on Student Representatives to the School Board.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>All <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/policy\">School Board policies<\/a> can be found on the ACPS website.<\/p>\n<p><b>Do you want to get involved in the policy making process?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This year the School Board will discuss policy revisions at periodic work sessions, and your input is welcomed.\u00a0 Members of the public can weigh in on policy issues:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0 During the public comment portion of each board meeting (<a href=\"https:\/\/acpsweb.wufoo.com\/forms\/zjkmhnk0tyb47r\/\">sign up here<\/a>);<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0 On the School Board\u2019s new online policy input form (coming soon);<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0 By joining a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/domain\/1025\">School Board Advisory Committee<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All School Board meetings and work sessions are open to the public, and are held at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/centraloffice\">ACPS Central Office<\/a> at 1340 Braddock Place.
