You can now get qualified through the Virginia Department of Education certified Virginia Commonwealth University career switcher program. In addition, Regent University\u2019s online program has now been expanded to include elementary education. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The alternative and faster route to licensure is part of the state\u2019s overall strategy for addressing a teacher shortage. As of 2018, there were 2,844 graduates of alternative teaching programs working in our schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> VCU\u2019s Pathways to Teaching career switcher program will provide instruction and support to participants as they navigate the pathway from preparation through induction and into ongoing, school-based learning,\u201d Dean Andrew Daire stated in a release.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VCU\u2019s newly established Pathways to Teaching program has been approved to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offer routes to teaching careers in the following areas:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">English<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">English as a Second Language PreK-12<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mathematics and Algebra I (add-on endorsement)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science (Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science and Physics)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">History and Social Sciences<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health and Physical Education PreK-12<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foreign Languages (French, German and Spanish)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Career and Technical Education (Business and Information Technology, Marketing Education, Technology Education, and Family and Consumer Sciences)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Computer Science<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Career Switcher Alternative Route to Licensure Program was established in 1999 to provide retiring military personnel an accelerated route to state licensure, but it was then opened up for any professional to apply. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prerequisites for acceptance into a career switcher program include a bachelor\u2019s degree from a regionally accredited college or university, completion of course work required for the area of endorsement, at least three years of successful full-time work experience, and qualifying scores <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on professional teachers\u2019 assessments prescribed by the Board of Education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who finish the program \u2014 that includes classroom experience \u2014 are given a provisional license. After working with a mentor, engaging in some additional training, and being recommended by a school division, graduates can get a five-year license. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.doe.virginia.gov\/teaching\/educator_preparation\/career_switcher\/index.shtml\">Learn more about the Career Switcher Program<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>People seeking a second career as a teacher have some new options.
