T.C. Wrestling Moving Up in Class

February 27, 2009 by · Comments Off

T.C. varsity wrestling has been improving its overall record this season. Last year, some of the wrestlers tended to be off weight, or skipping practice, and the varsity team did not have many key wrestlers, unlike this year. The improvements became evident in interviews with four of the varsity wrestlers.

When Tim Niebauer was asked what he does during the offseason to better his performance during the season he said that “conditioning, watching what I eat and dedication” are all contributing factors. After a loss he says that “thinking about what I did wrong and working on that” is key. Last year and this year he stayed on weight: 112 lbs. To continue improving, he plans to gain healthy weight. When avoiding temptations many teens come across in high school such as drugs, skipping practice, excess eating, etc. he says, “I think of the bad outcomes”. Niebauer also said that Coach Perkins and Coach Reisch have helped him with his  wrestling. Read more

Few people can say that they have trained with and competed against Olympic athletes. Even fewer can say they have had the chance to do so at 15 years old like sophomore Liam Malakoff. Malakoff competes in the sports of whitewater canoe racing and whitewater kayaking. In October, he took part in the American Open Canoe Slalom World Series. He competed against the world’s best and did well enough to receive an invitation to train with the U.S. Olympic team. In November Malakoff trained with the Olympic whitewater canoe racing team under coach Silvan Poberaj. Read more

November 12, 2008 by · Comments Off

If you are a dedicated athlete, it is necessary that you spend time during the off-season and summer vacation practicing and training for your sport, making sure to stay in good shape and preparing yourself for next season.  Running, jogging and stretching are essential exercises for any sport, while abdominal exercises are not only great for your body but are also some of the simplest and most important exercises you can do. Other exercises to keep you in shape, many of which you probably learned as a child in gym class, include sit-ups, push-ups, pull-ups, jumping jacks, and skipping rope.  Basic workouts like these will help you maintain a healthy heart rate and will keep your muscles loose and limber, thus decreasing the chance of an injury. By Aurielle Jones and Cecile Marsh

Coach Ivan Thomas led the boys’ varsity basketball team to winning the NAAA Conference in 2008. After winning the championship, losing seven seniors to graduation and Coach Thomas leaving T.C. Williams to begin a new chapter in his life, we all wondered which direction the Titan team would take. Our question was answered when Thomas passed on the reins to Julian King. King comes to T.C. Williams with years of proven experience as an assistant coach. But can he fill the void left by Head Coach Thomas and the expectations of the Titan fans? Read more
