Introducing the Proposed FY 2014 Combined Funds Budget

Students, Staff, Parents, Members of the School Board and the entire Alexandria Community:

I am honored to present to you my FY 2014 combined funds budget which is centered on our students and dedicated to their learning. Developing a budget for students growing up in our global society is a wonderful challenge as we all want to do so much for our students. With increasing enrollments in ACPS (as shown below) and with ever-increasing expectations for all students, the focus of this budget is how best to address the needs of our students as we come out of a severe economic recession which held down expenditures in areas such as textbooks, reading materials, and other essential learning resources, including support personnel. Moving ACPS Forward: FY 2013 Proposed Budget Invests in Our Future

I am honored to present to you my FY 2013 Proposed Operating Budget which is dedicated to the amazing students who attend Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS).  It is my privilege to serve our students and this community.

The proposed budget is designed to move us forward in our school division’s transition to academic excellence. I know that you join me in wanting to provide the best possible education to every ACPS student.

I believe that the FY 2013 proposed budget is an excellent budget, which balances the needs of our students, our community’s expectations, and the constraints of economic resources. (more…)

A School Division’s Budget is a Moral Document

The Alexandria City School Board and the Alexandria City Council conversation around the Fiscal Year 2013 budget has begun. Between now and November 22, the City Council will announce its guidance to help frame the creation of a fiscally responsible budget for the city and the school division. (more…)

Budget Blues

Last week, ACPS CFO Jean Sina and Deputy Superintendent Margaret Byess presented to the School Board a very bleak preliminary FY 2011 budget forecast.  I must emphasize “preliminary,” because it is based on a set of revenue assumptions that are subject to change.  We have no specifics at this point, but we do have plenty of angst.  It looks as though, under a best-case scenario, Alexandria City Public Schools will face an 11 million dollar gap, and it could be as high as $17 million.
