{"id":9894,"date":"2021-10-22T10:14:40","date_gmt":"2021-10-22T14:14:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/staff\/?p=9894"},"modified":"2021-10-22T10:40:14","modified_gmt":"2021-10-22T14:40:14","slug":"principal-and-teacher-of-the-year-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/staff\/principal-and-teacher-of-the-year-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Principal and Teacher of the Year Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each year, ACPS participates in The Washington Post <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/public-relations\/teacher-principal-awards\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Principal of the Year and Teacher of the Year Awards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which recognizes excellence in education in the region. All members of the ACPS community, including families, students, residents and ACPS staff, are invited to make their nominations by Nov. 22, 2021, using the criteria listed below:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For teacher nominations, written statements of support are due to their principal before Nov. 22, 2021. Each principal will then choose one nominee from their school to go on to the ACPS finalists round.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For principal nominations, written statements of support are due to Sherri Tullia of the Department of Teaching, Learning and Leadership at <\/span><a href=\"mailto:sherri.tullia@acps.k12.va.us\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sherri.tullia@acps.k12.va.us<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before Nov. 22, 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each principal will receive a message via email on Oct. 25 from Alexandra Bourdouane of the Department of School and Community Relations that will include a folder for each school\u2019s submission for the Teacher of the Year award. All nomination packets must be submitted by school principals, using these folders, by Dec. 3, 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be eligible for <\/span><b>The Washington Post Principal of the Year Award<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, nominees must be full-time principals (in grades pre-kindergarten through 12) in an accredited school in the Washington metropolitan region, per the newspaper\u2019s list of jurisdictions. Nominees must have a minimum of five years\u2019 experience as a principal, three of which must be in the school or school system in which they are currently serving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nominees must be serving as an administrator for the 2021-22 school year and must meet the following criteria:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manage effectively.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demonstrate and encourage creativity and innovation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foster cooperation between the school and the community.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintain a continuing dialogue with students and parents as well as faculty and staff.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep abreast of developments in the field of education.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encourage team spirit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demonstrate leadership and exemplify commitment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Continue to play an active role in the classroom.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintain their position as principal throughout the 2021-22 school year.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be eligible for <\/span><b>The Washington Post Teacher of the Year Award<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, nominees must be full-time teachers (in grades pre-kindergarten through 12) in an accredited school in the Washington metropolitan region, per the newspaper\u2019s list of jurisdictions. Nominees must have a minimum of five years\u2019 teaching experience, three of which must be in the school or school system in which they are currently serving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nominees must be serving as a teacher for the 2021-22 school year and must meet the following criteria:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instill in students a desire to learn and achieve.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understand the individual needs of students, encourage their talents and foster their self-esteem.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of subject matter and the ability to share it effectively with students.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foster cooperative relationships with their colleagues and the community.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demonstrate outstanding leadership.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintain their teaching position throughout the 2021-22 school year.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ACPS Principal of the Year and Teacher of the Year will be selected by an ACPS panel in early 2022 and will be announced in April 2022.
