The pandemic has placed enormous constraints on how we are able to function and I want to reassure you that our team is doing everything possible to ensure we are maximizing our resources as well as carefully assessing the feasibility of every option available. Please look out for a special edition of ACPS Express on Friday, July 31.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week, 2,200 people joined our Community Chats, many who shared with us that they appreciated the chance to engage, albeit virtually. Hundreds of questions were submitted and are in the process of being answered on our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/domain\/1524\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reopening FAQs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> webpage. In total, there were more than 22,000 views of the FAQs and community chats on the website.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of these questions made us think in new and innovative ways as we continue to explore a multitude of scenarios. Many of the points raised will help us as we move forward through the 2020-21 academic year. Yesterday, we heard from our students during dedicated chats held to garner their thoughts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each week, 150 staff, students, parents and community partners gather for at least four hours as part of the Cross-Functional Planning Teams to sift through ideas and come up with new options. There is no doubt about it, this has been a successful collaborative community effort. We are on the same page, advocating for our students and staff together. The incredible engagement our community has shown throughout these last few months has been both inspiring and reassuring. We want to thank you for being part of the planning process for reopening our schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nothing about this process has been easy for any one of us. Not a day has gone by since March 13 when this issue has not been at the forefront of my mind. And, I imagine you have all felt the same at some point since March 13.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many ways, Friday\u2019s announcement will be just the beginning. Once the Virginia Department of Education approves our proposal that we are required to submit by Aug. 14, our hard work continues as we begin to prepare for implementation of our reopening plan. The week of Aug. 14, we will be sharing schedules, curriculum and expectations for both staff and students. I understand that you need information to plan for your lives and I understand that school is central to that process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Friday also marks the end of our Summer Learning program. We hope your students have enjoyed this enriching and rewarding experience that will set them up for success for the 2020-21 academic year. See <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/Page\/3205\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how we communicate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> information around COVID-19 and encourage anyone who is not already signed up for our ACPS Express updates to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/lists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sign up online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What Happens Next?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACPS is evaluating schedule options that are aligned to hybrid and virtual models, highlighting implications, feasibility and considerations across financial, operational, staffing, safety, etc. Over the course of two weeks, a scheduling team analyzed 18<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1S4gpNRjM-Dgr_ziOL16l5UgMRfjoMqivGgSI9fiaNI0\/edit#slide=id.g8d65749daf_0_256\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">example schedules and plans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from districts in Northern Virginia, the DMV, and across the U.S. to create schedule samples and division guidance to support school leaders in both hybrid and virtual models. Principals have been heavily involved in creating test school schedules specific for their buildings to identify the benefits and limitations of each model.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each model\u2019s feasibility and practicality has been assessed using a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Day in the Life<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> activity. Hundreds of questions were posed to our panelists. Alternatively, find the answers to your questions in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/Page\/3121\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FAQ<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Virginia High School League Votes to Delay Start of Sports Season<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vhsl.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virginia High School League<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> announced on Monday that the sports season will not begin until Dec. 14 to mitigate the chance of spreading COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbc29.com\/2020\/07\/27\/no-sports-until-december-vhsl-votes-delay-start-season-due-covid-\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VHSL says the decision was made<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the health and safety of student-athletes as a main priority.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All sports will still be played, but in a condensed and altered format with winter sports like basketball, gymnastics, indoor track, swim\/dive, and wrestling running from Dec. 14, 2020 through Feb. 20, 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fall sports like cheer, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, and volleyball have the biggest change, as they have been moved to Feb. 15 through May 1, 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spring sports like baseball, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, and track and field will take place April 12 through June 26, 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Summer Learning For All<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What a month we have had with our Summer Learning program, which proved to be a huge success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We hope you enjoy this video recapping some of the fun moments we had together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/442146577\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16748 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2020-07-28-at-8.54.45-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1208\" height=\"714\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Monday, we also appeared on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wjla.com\/features\/spotlight-on-education\/thousands-of-alexandria-city-public-schools-students-spend-summer-in-school\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WJLA\u2019s Spotlight on Education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wjla.com\/features\/spotlight-on-education\/thousands-of-alexandria-city-public-schools-students-spend-summer-in-school\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16749 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2020-07-28-at-8.49.16-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1306\" height=\"736\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thank you to all who took part and especially those teachers and administrators who made this extraordinary endeavor become a reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>George Washington Middle School Student Receives African American History Award<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">George Washington Middle School Student Patrick Ostermann-Healey received a prestigious award after writing a paper about the 1939 Virginia Library Sit-In that took place in Alexandria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patrick competed against students from all over the globe in a competition organized by the Maryland nonprofit, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhd.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National History Day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Werner, executive director of the Office of Specialized Instruction, said, \u201cLaura brings a wealth of experience and knowledge that will further our mission of equity for all, even the youngest among us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Apply for a RunningBrooke Grant<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alexandria fitness nonprofit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/runningbrooke.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RunningBrooke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is offering teachers and administrators the chance to apply for thousands of dollars in grant money to kick-start student fitness in the 2020-21 academic year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have until Aug. 15 to apply for funding to be used exclusively for the benefit of ACPS schools and students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more information and to apply, please visit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/r\/2020M2LGrants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RunningBrooke\u2019s Move2Learn grant application<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Temperature Screening at ACPS Buildings<\/h2>\n<p>Anyone requiring access to an ACPS facility or school will be required to undergo a temperature check to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Testing stations will be established at seven locations, at or close to ACPS meal distribution sites and locations where major summer construction will take place.
