{"id":917,"date":"2016-02-28T08:52:00","date_gmt":"2016-02-28T13:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/staff\/?p=917"},"modified":"2016-02-29T08:05:05","modified_gmt":"2016-02-29T13:05:05","slug":"celebrate-read-across-america-day-by-winning-books-for-your-classroom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/staff\/celebrate-read-across-america-day-by-winning-books-for-your-classroom\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrate Read Across America Day by Winning Books for Your Classroom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Read Across America Day, the nation&#8217;s largest reading-themed celebration, will take place on Wednesday, March 2.<\/p>\n<p>The day, organized by The National Education Association, will be celebrated with a series of ongoing activities in schools throughout the week. Students, parents and staff will participate in a variety of fun and educational activities to salute books and honor the birthday of beloved &#8220;The Cat in the Hat&#8221; author Dr. Seuss.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>To kick things off, ACPS is holding a special social media contest. Just tweet or post the title or a picture of your favorite children\u2019s book on Twitter or on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/acpsk12\/\">ACPS Facebook Page<\/a> with the hashtag #ReadACPS. Be sure to mention @ACPSk12 on Twitter, or @Alexandria City Public Schools on Facebook.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>One winner will be selected from submissions to receive $100 in free books and classroom literacy supplies.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the fun ways that some of our schools will be celebrating Read Across America Day during the week of March 2:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Charles Barrett Elementary School<\/strong>\u00a0students will Drop Everything and Read (DEAR).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology<\/strong>\u00a0will wear crazy socks and read Dr. Seuss\u2019 story, \u201cFox in Socks\u201d. They will also be participating in\u00a0buddy reading day on Friday,\u00a0DEAR time,\u00a0inviting community members to come to school and read to different classes and having a reading competition for the month of March ending with a celebration ceremony.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Douglas MacArthur Elementary School<\/strong>\u00a0students will get moving with \u201cRead Up, Read Down, Read All Around\u201d by Dr. Seuss.<\/p>\n<p><strong>James Polk Elementary School<\/strong>\u00a0students will dress up as their favorite Dr. Seuss characters, or wearing white and\/or their\u00a0\u2018Grinch-iest\u2019 green.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy<\/strong> students will wear crazy hats, as Dr. Seuss once did, in honor of The Cat in the Hat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mount Vernon Community School<\/strong>\u00a0students will be visited by community readers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Matthew Maury Elementary School<\/strong>\u00a0students will respond to literacy trivia questions each morning, participate in buddy reading and have a visit by reading specialists and volunteers who will act out a well-known children&#8217;s story for students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Williams Ramsay Elementary School<\/strong>\u00a0students will host guest readers on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Patrick Henry Elementary School\u00a0<\/strong>will have reading trivia on the announcements each day, teachers will share their favorite Dr. Seuss book with their class, and students and teachers will wear mismatched socks and will DEAR on\u00a0Dr. Seuss\u2019 Birthday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ACPS Central Office staff<\/strong> will be visiting schools all week to read their favorite books to classes.<\/p>\n<p>Have fun reading! #ReadACPS<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ACPS is celebrating Read Across America Day by giving away classroom supplies and books.
