We\u2019ve made it to our sixth week of teaching and learning from home. I will continue to praise you, my ACPS family, for your hard work and dedication as we continue to educate and support our young people each day during the COVID-19 pandemic. Each of you are the epitome of vision, integrity and passion (VIP) and we are so fortunate to be a part of a school division that\u2019s making it happen on behalf of our students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This week, it was great to see our George Washington Middle School teacher, Colleen McEnearney, featured in a Washington Post article chronicling her typical working day. Tomorrow evening, Dr. Elizabeth Hoover, our Chief Technology Officer, will be appearing on <\/span>Zebra TV<\/span><\/a> talking about our technology efforts to ensure our students are able to successfully engage in learning from home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Speaking of TV, students can now access our original learning shows created by our educators \u201con demand.\u201d The content, aimed at children in preK-2, is available on the <\/span>ACPS-at-Home<\/span><\/a> website.<\/span><\/p>\n Finally, please join me in welcoming our newest Chief, Julia A. Burgos, who will join ACPS on July 2, 2020 from Arlington Public Schools where she has been chief of staff since 2013. Mrs. Burgos will be taking on the new role of Chief of School and Community Relations and will be overseeing the merger of two of our offices: the Office of School, Business and Community Partnerships and the Office of Communications. Her great work was profiled on Monday along with student Madeline Arnold.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Please take a moment to read <\/span>Live vs. tape-delayed: How two approaches to online learning change life for teachers and students<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n And be sure to check out <\/span>Zebra TV\u2019s Facebook page<\/span><\/a> at 7 p.m. tomorrow to see Dr. Elizabeth Hoover, ACPS Chief Technology Officer, interviewed about all the work that has gone on to ensure our students are equipped for online, remote learning.<\/span><\/p>\n For a few weeks now, many of our educators have been busily turning into TV stars for our younger students in grades pre-K through 2nd grade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n To supplement our elementary level educational packets and homeroom teacher guidance, many have also thrown themselves into recording engaging and fun thirty minute lessons.<\/span><\/p>\n Lesson\u2019s include \u201cRhyming Fun with Ms. Nelson\u201d and \u201cMs. Gore\u2019s Color Lesson\u201d aimed at pre-K and kindergarten.<\/span><\/p>\n Those in first and second grade have been invited to watch \u201cMr. Humphrey\u2019s Underhanded Throwing Technique\u201d and \u201cFractions with Miss Martin\u201d amongst other topics.<\/span><\/p>\n Up until now, the shows have only been available to watch on set schedules on our ACPS-TV channel and the City of Alexandria\u2019s AlexTV channel, as well as on our website.<\/span><\/p>\n But now, they are available for students to view repeatedly at their convenience through links on the ACPS-at-home webpage.<\/span><\/p>\n Check out the recorded lessons aimed at students in pre-K and kindergarten at <\/span>Pre-K and Kindergarten Learning from Home<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>First and Second Grade Learning from Home<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Students can still tune in between 8 to 11:30 a.m each day for the latest content on <\/span>AlexTV Cable Channel 70 (PreK-K) and<\/b> ACPS-TV Cable Channel 71 (Grades 1 and 2)<\/b> if you have a Comcast package.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This will include:<\/span><\/p>\n We also want to say a HUGE thank you to those teachers who have already submitted a video lesson for the TV.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Corinne Nelson; Kelly J. Keep them coming!<\/span><\/p>\n If you have not already submitted a video lesson for Pre-K, K, Grade 1 or Grade 2, please consider creating one today! You do not have to be a teacher of one of these grades to take part in this project. Any teacher can submit a video as long as the lesson is aimed at these grade levels. We have tried to make the process simple and many teachers who have tried it have found it fun!<\/span><\/p>\n In addition you get recertification points for EVERY video that is approved for the TV!<\/span><\/p>\n All the information is in the TV Handbook on the ACPS-at-Home website<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n We all know graduation is likely to look a bit different this year but here\u2019s a fun and memorable way to have our seniors mark the occasion.<\/span><\/p>\n U.S. Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia is asking for our Class of 2020 seniors to record and submit an original speech they would like to give at graduation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n He will then select speeches to feature on his<\/span> Facebook page<\/span><\/a> and<\/span> U.S. Senate website<\/span><\/a> during May and June to celebrate the graduates.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cOne of the many groups of Virginians I\u2019ve been thinking about during this challenging time is the graduates of the Class of 2020, many of whom won\u2019t have the graduation experience they\u2019ve been planning for a long time.”<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI feel a sense of loss about that, so I want to do something fun for them and give all high school seniors the chance to be a graduation speaker. I look forward to hearing the wisdom Virginia\u2019s future leaders have to offer and sharing their inspiration with others.
