Williams High School alum Tracy Young made history last week when she became the first woman to win a Grammy music award in the Best Remixed Recording category.<\/p>\n<p>The influential Titan, who graduated in 1988, was recognized for her remix of Madonna\u2019s single \u201cI Rise\u201d at the annual ceremony in Los Angeles on January 26.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, she told ACPS she had fond memories of her high school days which she said taught her \u201cabout the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Growing up and attending T.C. Williams was something that was very special to me!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI learned how to survive in the world before I knew anything about the world. It taught me to interact with people from all walks of life and different cultural upbringings due to the diversity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI still keep in touch with my friends who I met there and consider them family. I loved being Senior Class President and enjoyed putting together an assembly performance by Chuck Brown for a Say No To Drugs concert.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15678\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15678\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15678 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/grammy_winner-260x179.png\" alt=\"Tracy Young, Grammy winner\" width=\"260\" height=\"179\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15678\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tracy Young as a senior at T.C. Williams High School<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She is well remembered by her former principal, John Porter, who explained she was part of a group of students who won a radio competition to bring Brown, the Godfather of Go-Go, to play in the auditorium.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was delighted to hear about Tracy\u2019s historic success and, as her former principal, I am very proud of her achievement. She is yet another Titan going out into the world and reaching amazing heights,&#8221; Porter said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I remember so well the special assembly and how excited the students were that they had organized this event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Young has told of the moment when her name was called out at the prestigious award ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.djtimes.com\/tracy-young-grammy-madonna-i-rise-grammy\/\">DJ Times<\/a>, the music industry publication, she said, \u201cI was in the far back of the room, so when they called my name I had this long walk. It was so overwhelming. I was in shock and I cried all the way up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On stage, she thanked her family and friends and the LGBTQ community for their support.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We made history, ladies. I proudly accept this on behalf of all female producers who have been overlooked,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She also thanked Madonna, \u201cfor all the opportunities and recognition over many, many years \u2014 I\u2019m overwhelmed with gratitude to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Young, 49, started her music career after graduating from T.C. in 1988. She got a job at the DC radio station WPGC 95.5 FM as a mix show DJ, spinning hip hop.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, a female DJ was almost unheard of and she quickly rose up the ranks to become the station\u2019s music director before moving to Miami, where she now lives.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15705\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15705\" style=\"width: 635px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15705\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/mike_ruiz_credit-800x551.jpeg\" alt=\"DJ Tracy Young\" width=\"635\" height=\"437\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15705\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo\/Mike Ruiz<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Young first met Madonna in the mid 1990s and was hired by her to perform at her wedding to Guy Ritchie.<\/p>\n<p>She credits Madonna\u2019s support as leading her to remix songs by Britney Spears, Beyonc\u00e9, Christina Aguilera and Cher.<\/p>\n<p>Young has remixed more than 100 artists and produced seven compilations on her own label, FEROSH.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor of Miami has declared December 11 \u2018Tracy Young Day\u2019 in Miami in recognition of her talent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sYCgSzaO5ko\">Hear her award-winning remix of \u201cI Rise\u201d.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>T.C.
