{"id":7608,"date":"2019-09-15T20:08:45","date_gmt":"2019-09-16T00:08:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/staff\/?p=7608"},"modified":"2019-09-15T20:49:58","modified_gmt":"2019-09-16T00:49:58","slug":"do-you-know-about-the-acps-policy-on-providing-translation-and-interpretation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/staff\/do-you-know-about-the-acps-policy-on-providing-translation-and-interpretation\/","title":{"rendered":"Do You Know About the ACPS Policy on Providing Translation and Interpretation?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last year the School Board updated the policy relating to translation and interpretation services to improve guidelines for staff members communicating with families.<\/p>\n<p>ACPS wants to provide effective access to information about schools, programs, services and activities to parents and caregivers in their preferred language.<\/p>\n<p>Often, conversations between schools and Limited English Proficient family members are provided by bilingual division staff, including parent liaisons.<\/p>\n<p><b>However, all essential information provided by the division and schools, including written and verbal interpretation at official meetings<\/b> <strong>such as parent-teacher conferences,<\/strong> <b>must be provided by certified staff or vendors contracted to provide these services, except in cases where the safety of a child is in jeopardy.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Staff may request translation and interpretation services for family members through the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/translation\"><b>online translation and interpretation request forms<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/cms\/lib\/VA01918616\/Centricity\/Shared\/documents\/school-board-policies\/IGBC-R.pdf\">Read the full Family and Community Engagement regulation (PDF)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/cms\/lib\/VA01918616\/Centricity\/Shared\/documents\/school-board-policies\/kb.pdf\">Policy KB: Public Information Program (PDF)<\/a>, ACPS commits\u00a0 to providing the Code of Conduct, the Family Handbook, and the student report card framework in the <b>four major division-wide languages of English, Spanish, Amharic and Arabic<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>ACPS translates a student\u2019s full report card upon request. When possible, ACPS also translates other major documents into the four languages.<\/p>\n<p><b>Do you want to get involved in the policy making process?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This year the School Board will discuss policy revisions at periodic work sessions, and your input is welcomed.<\/p>\n<p>Members of staff can weigh in on policy issues:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>During the public comment portion of each Board Meeting (<a href=\"https:\/\/acpsweb.wufoo.com\/forms\/zjkmhnk0tyb47r\/\">sign up here<\/a>);<\/li>\n<li>On the School Board\u2019s new online policy input form (coming soon);<\/li>\n<li>By joining a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/domain\/1025\">School Board Advisory Committee<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All School Board meetings and work sessions are open to staff, and are held at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/centraloffice\">ACPS Central Office<\/a>\u00a0at 1340 Braddock Place.
