Polk Elementary School have been recognized for exemplary performance. Alexandria has two of the 52 schools in the commonwealth to earn the 2019 Board of Education Highest Achievement Award. Francis C. Hammond and George Washington middle schools were awarded 2019 Board of Education Continuous Improvement Awards. These awards are aligned with the Board of Education\u2019s revised accreditation standards and replace the Virginia Index of Performance recognition program. These awards recognize schools that produce consistent gains in academic achievement and successful efforts to reduce absenteeism and dropout rates. <\/span>You will be hearing more about this later in the year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/alexandriaschoolsva.swagit.com\/play\/06202019-1208\/11\/\">Watch video of the announcement<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Talented and Gifted (TAG) Evaluation Update<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 2019-20 school year, ACPS will be making some adjustments to the delivery of TAG services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>1. Introduction of new identification pathways through:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Creation of a talent search team<\/li>\n<li>Focus on growth factors<\/li>\n<li>Use of a variety of culturally sensitive instruments to help identify English Learners<\/li>\n<li>Design of an identification process for students receiving specialized instruction<\/li>\n<li>Official designation of Young Scholars as part of the TAG program<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2. Adjustment of the screening process:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Move screening from the first semester to the first quarter<\/li>\n<li>Move the main identification window to spring<\/li>\n<li>This will reduce the number of students placed in new classes in the middle of the school year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3. Adjustment of placements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cluster students based on General Intellectual Aptitude and Young Scholar identification in classes with select teachers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>4. Strengthen professional development options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This includes creating a local gifted endorsement<\/li>\n<li>ACPS will be exploring alternative options for the future<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>5. The push-in and pull-out (separate service) models for delivering fourth-\/fifth-grade language arts will be evaluated<\/p>\n<p>6. Middle school offerings will begin a redesign and will be aligned with high school programming<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/alexandriaschoolsva.swagit.com\/play\/06202019-1208\/6\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watch video of the presentation<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/esbpublic.acps.k12.va.us\/attachments\/043fa7e8-5469-47ff-97e4-555298dbed0b.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">View the presentation slides (PDF)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>ACPS 2025 Strategic Plan Update<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The development of the 2025 Strategic Plan will be developed through a lens of equity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A diverse group of 2025 Strategic Planning Committee representatives have now been finalized and details of the committees can be found on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/Page\/2501\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACPS website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a kick-off event was held on June 19 to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Build community<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Develop a shared understanding of equity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Develop and understand the importance and process of strategic planning within ACPS<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The School Board will be asked to revisit ACPS\u2019 vision, mission, core beliefs, and values in the coming months. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identified Board members will serve on the Steering Committee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/alexandriaschoolsva.swagit.com\/play\/06202019-1208\/6\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watch video of the presentation<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/esbpublic.acps.k12.va.us\/attachments\/f1add0ae-3505-4d7a-b835-999c6f05f60f.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">View the presentation slides (PDF)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Facilities Summer Projects<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facilities will be carrying a number of projects this summer. See the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/esbpublic.acps.k12.va.us\/attachments\/46132ab6-9fa5-4716-a69d-b06d01e44e6d.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">full list of projects (PDF)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0for work at all schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Graduation by the Numbers<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrate our Class of 2019 graduation with us! <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">757 students graduated from T.C. Williams High School on June 15<\/span><\/li>\n<li>204 received English Learner services during their time as a student with ACPS<\/li>\n<li>More than 80% of the Class of 2019 have said they will be going on to college in the fall<\/li>\n<li>474 students have reported confirmed college places<\/li>\n<li>331 graduated with an advanced diploma; 406 with a standard diploma<\/li>\n<li>47 additional students will be eligible to graduate this summer<\/li>\n<li>18 students are pursuing careers in the military<\/li>\n<li>8% will engage in apprenticeship or industry programs<\/li>\n<li>57 plan to head directly into the workforce<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strong results are due to an amplified focus on ensuring all students get the needed support \u2014 programs such as Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) provide support for students who may be the first in their family to go to college \u2014 and the start of a concerted focus on equity (including an equity audit and equity training) to ensure all students have access to higher level courses and a rigorous curriculum.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>The graduation ceremony earned 14,203 engagements on social media<\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>There were 1,692 engagements (12% of total graduation ceremony engagements) for social media posts in Spanish\/Arabic\/Amharic<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/acpsespanol\">ACPS en espa\u00f1ol Facebook page<\/a> gained 109 followers over graduation weekend<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congratulations to all our graduates!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Thursday night, the School Board held its last school board meeting of the school year.
