Williams Remembers One of Its Greatest Titans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Iconic Remember the Titans Coach Bill Yoast, who helped transform race relations in Alexandria in the 1970s, has died.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">William \u201cBill\u201d Yoast, 94, died at Aarondale Retirement and Assisted Living in Springfield, Virginia. The former T.C. Williams coach was immortalized in the movie,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Remember the Titans<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about the 1971 integration of Alexandria\u2019s high schools. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13476 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/yoast_square-1-of-1-260x260.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"260\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yoast \u2014 a legendary coach at the all-white Francis C. Hammond High School before he became defensive coach at T.C. Williams High School \u2014 put politics aside to work with T.C.\u2019s first African American head coach, Herman Boone. The two pulled together to solidify a diverse group of students into the most successful football team in the state that year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More importantly, the football games, and Yoast and Boone\u2019s relationship brought together the formerly-divided city of Alexandria to support their winning integrated school team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coach Yoast has been remembered as a quiet, humble people-person. He didn\u2019t shy away from discussing issues even during the difficult times Alexandria was going through, and was instrumental in helping pull the city together.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13479\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13479\" style=\"width: 635px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13479 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2019-05-24-at-2.45.40-PM-e1558725083331-668x600.png\" alt=\"Coach Yoast\" width=\"635\" height=\"570\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13479\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Linebacker Gerry Bertier, T.C.&#8217;s All-State and All-Southern linebacker who was injured in a an automobile crash, gets a visit from Coach Bill Yoast and former Redskins player Sam Huff while recovering in the hospital.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Bill was not going to allow racial differences to exist in this city,\u201d said Coach Boone talking about his friend and former colleague from his own hospital bed on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though Yoast and Boone were as different as \u201cnight and day,\u201d Boone said, \u201cHe and I found a way to talk to each other and trust each other.\u201d In the end, Boone said Yoast was the best friend he ever had.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13481\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13481\" style=\"width: 432px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13481 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/yoast2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"432\" height=\"288\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13481\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left to right: Coach Bill Yoast, actor Will Patton, Coach Herman Boone, actor Denzel Washington.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was when the integration plan was announced. We thought it was a joke. But it turned out to be better for us than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brown v. Board of Education<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It was not easy. People were not accepting integration. But you could see it in Bill Yoast. You can\u2019t fake believing. You can lie about things, but you cannot fake your beliefs.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1971, the Alexandria City School Board\u2019s decision to swiftly integrate the two upper grades of the two all-white high schools with the one all-black T.C. Williams happened amid racial unrest, riots and more subtle discomfort.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This month is the 65th anniversary of the Supreme Court\u2019s Brown vs. Board of Education decision requiring school districts to integrate. Virginia engaged in a campaign to avoid integration called \u201cThe Massive Resistance,\u201d that delayed Alexandria\u2019s efforts for five years. When the city finally did begin to integrate, Yoast\u2019s decisions made in a politically volatile climate helped bridge racial divides.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, Boone said he and Yoast didn\u2019t like each other at first \u2014 not until they started working together. The system was very divided, according to Boone, who said the families from the different schools didn\u2019t like each other. There were a lot of rivalries that spilled out around the football games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the end of the Titan\u2019s season, however, President Richard Nixon told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washington Post<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cThe Titans of Alexandria saved the city of Alexandria.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5480\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5480\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5480 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Boone-and-Yoast.jpg\" alt=\"T.C. Yoast started college at Georgia Military College and then Mercer University in Macon, GA where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education. His master\u2019s degree was from Peabody College, in Nashville, Tenn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13480 size-full alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/yoast2-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After working in Sparta, Georgia as a coach for football, basketball, baseball and track, Yoast moved to Roswell and taught track and football for seven years. It was then he moved to Alexandria, VA where he coached Francis C. Hammond High school and led them to regional champs in 1969 before coaching at T.C. Williams High school. He spent three decades coaching in Alexandria, VA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yoast and his wife, Betty, had four daughters and seven grandchildren. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and working out. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yoast, born in 1924 in Florence, Alabama was played by another southerner, South Carolina actor William Patton in <em>Remember the Titans<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The family will receive friends on Friday, May31, from 5-8 p.m. at the Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, in Springfield. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 1, at 2 p.m. at St. John\u2019s United Methodist Church, 5312Backlick Road, also in Springfield.
