Hutchings, Jr."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today marks day one as your new superintendent. I am so excited to be back home and <a href=\"#meetandgreet\">look forward to meeting<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and working collaboratively with each of you<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the past several months since my appointment was announced, I\u2019ve had the immense pleasure of returning to Alexandria periodically as part of my transition. I\u2019ve met with Interim Superintendent Lois F. Berlin and conferred with the School Board, ACPS leadership, administrators, future colleagues and City counterparts. I\u2019ve engaged with staff and families on school tours and engaged with the community through a variety of meetings and events. I\u2019ve had lunch with grandparents and enjoyed \u201ccoffee with the principal\u201d\u2014it\u2019s been quite invigorating. I\u2019ve learned so much over the past few months and look forward to the learning that is to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week, I read about the great <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/staff\/reflecting-on-the-accomplishments-of-our-great-staff-this-year\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">achievements of our staff<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/?p=9860\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">legends who have retired<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0from our wonderful profession and our students in the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/?p=9873\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">year-end highlights<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I am so inspired by your dedication and commitment to student achievement and I\u2019m eager<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to continue the great work already underway to ensure that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every Student Succeeds<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/100dayplan\">first 100 days<\/a>\u00a0will be focused on a transition plan that is shaped around the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/acps2020\">ACPS 2020 <\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/Domain\/798\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every Student Succeeds S<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/Domain\/798\">trategic Plan<\/a>. Through collaboration with school and central office leaders, I\u2019ll be assessing our progress toward the goals laid out in the plan and laying the groundwork for the actions we\u2019ll be taking in year four of the plan. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using our school division\u2019s metrics, I\u2019ll be analyzing data around student achievement to assess our greatest assets and where we need to grow. Through collaboration with our principals and teacher leaders, I\u2019ll review school education plans with a focus on closing achievement gaps and ensuring equity for all students. And, we\u2019ll launch a Leadership Institute for all school division leaders to address continuous improvement and ensure success for all students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll spend time in the community connecting with our School Board members, city officials and community groups and organizations to ensure efficient communication and collaboration as we work together in the education of our young people in ACPS. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll see me at community meetings, walking neighborhoods, engaging in &#8220;listening and learning&#8221; sessions, attending back-to-school nights and school events, and more. And, I look forward to seeing you out there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having an exemplary staff is critical to our work, so I\u2019ll also be looking to you in my first 100 days. I\u2019ll be exploring our efforts in hiring and retaining staff members that best meet the needs of all students. Furthermore, I want to ensure that you have the supports you need \u2014 such as professional learning opportunities, leadership training and planning, and effective employee relations processes \u2014 that will enable you to succeed in your roles and focus your efforts on student achievement and success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><a id=\"meetandgreet\"><\/a>I look forward to meeting, connecting with and learning from each of you.
