On October 10 alone, there are over 30 professional development offerings. We are asking our professional development staff to sift through the offerings each week and profile some of the courses they see as most relevant. ACPS Insider will highlight these each week.\u00a0 The professional development post will have the same headline so you know where to find the offerings: <em>Professional Development Highlight<\/em>s. This is our first selection. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>To view all professional development offerings or to sign up for courses, please log in to the PLMS website.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/acps.truenorthlogic.com\/U\/P\/Channel\/-\/ExternalChannel?Path=%2Fia%2Fapp%2Fcal%2FlistView%3Fmonth%3D9%26year%3D2016\">View all the offerings for the divisionwide Professional Development Day on October 10. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Teaching across Cultures<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Teaching across Cultures is a\u00a0three part\u00a0part series providing information and strategies staff can use immediately to enrich relationships and curriculum. Sessions will focus on many of the experiences of students in ACPS classroom sand will be held in the multi-purpose room at Lyles Crouch Elementary School from\u00a0 4:15 p.m.-5:45 p.m.\u00a0 Join us for one or all sections of the series.<\/p>\n<p>Section 1 <strong><em><u>Reaching and Teaching Students from Central America<\/u><\/em><\/strong> lead by Teach for Change staff and affiliates. (Open to 40 participants)<\/p>\n<p>More than four million Central Americans reside in the United States today, yet Central American history and literature are missing from the school curriculum. This three-part workshop series will help fill that gap providing participants with the knowledge and skills required for enhancing culturally responsive teaching and meeting\u00a0the needs of this student group. During sessions participants will be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>introduced to levels of integration of multicultural content<\/li>\n<li>become familiar with to interactive strategies that can be used in K-12 classroom<\/li>\n<li>explore the contemporary socio-economic issues in Central America<\/li>\n<li>learn about important historical and current Central American figures and authors of poetry and prose.<\/li>\n<li>review culturally inclusive lesson plans that can be used in K-12 classrooms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Staff must attend all three sessions in this section \u00a0and register in PLMS to receive a complimentary copy of the book titled <em><u>Beyond Heroes and Holidays: A Practical Guide to K 12 Anti-Racist, Multicultural Education and Staff Development <\/u><\/em>by Enid Lee<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 1\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 October 18, 2016<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 2<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 October 25, 2016<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 3<\/strong> November 1, 2016<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Section 2 <strong><em><u>Family Reunification\u00a0\u00a0 <\/u><\/em><\/strong>(Open to 40 participants)<\/p>\n<p>Students experience a variety of situations that require families to reunify. We are most familiar with the need to reunify families who migrate to the United States. Staff who work with students whose parents provide military service, are experiencing divorce or separation, foster care and\/or incarcerations can also benefit from knowing the signs of students stress related to reunification and strategies that build on students strengths and can students to achieve academically, socially and emotionally. Join us for the 2 part series.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 1\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 November 22, 2016<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part 2<\/strong> November 29, 2016<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Educator&#8217;s Round Table Discussions <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Join colleagues to read and discuss articles related to current topics in equity and culturally responsive teaching. No preparation is required. Just enjoy reading and \u00a0reflective professional conversations with colleagues. Recertification points are available when you register in PLMS. Come to one.
