{"id":1308,"date":"2016-05-06T09:00:02","date_gmt":"2016-05-06T13:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/staff\/?p=1308"},"modified":"2016-05-06T18:28:09","modified_gmt":"2016-05-06T22:28:09","slug":"learn-how-to-help-young-people-in-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/staff\/learn-how-to-help-young-people-in-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"Learn How to Help Young People in Crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A course teaching adults how to respond to youths in crisis is being offered through the City of Alexandria.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alexandriava.gov\/dchs\/info\/default.aspx?id=74178\">Youth\u00a0Mental\u00a0Health\u00a0First Aid (MHFA)<\/a> course is offered on May 17 and 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>This training demonstrates the initial help needed for a person showing signs of\u00a0mental\u00a0illness or a\u00a0mental\u00a0health crisis. The eight-hour course teaches risk factors, warning signs and symptoms of\u00a0mental\u00a0health\u00a0and substance use disorders, the effects of the illnesses and an overview of treatments, and a five-step action plan for helping someone with symptoms. Each session is two four-hour classes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/survey.alexandriava.gov\/s3\/MHFARegistration\">Registration<\/a> is open until filled and is limited to 20 participants per class.\u00a0Attendees of the full eight-hour course will receive a three-year certification in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org\/cs\/\">Mental Health First Aid<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This training is designed to help paraprofessionals and liaisons provide support until an individual is linked to professional resources. It does not prepare someone to diagnose or provide treatment. MHFA is not recommended for licensed\u00a0mental\u00a0health\u00a0providers.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Alexandria is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
