ACPS Sees Math Progress While Work Remains

- News and Announcements

Dear ACPS Staff,

I want to share with you the news release that went out a few minutes ago regarding the Virginia Standards of Learning results. While these results still have some way to go, what they show is that our intentional focus on math this year has afforded us progress in this subject area. The work we have done through professional learning with Marilyn Friend, the adoption of Kagan practices and the development of our curriculum alongside a curriculum timeline have undoubtedly had a positive impact.

This year, our focus will be on reading while continuing to focus on mathematics.

ACPS has already taken a variety of proactive measures to ensure success this coming school year in this area. These include:

  • implementing a new comprehensive elementary reading program;
  • focusing on writing instruction at all grade levels;
  • continuing alignment of the curriculum with Virginia State standards;
  • ongoing data analysis and instructional support using reading inventory results and other assessment measures; and
  • sustaining professional learning at all grade-levels.

We have to continue to relentlessly advocate for all students and remove educational barriers that prevent any child from reaching their highest level desired.

I want to thank you for your continued hard work, your continued commitment to serving all students and the difference you have made in students’ lives this year and beyond.

Attached are some key takeaways (PDF) for the school division around our work.

Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr.
Superintendent of Schools
