Day Elementary School to Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>We\u2019ve been quite busy since we <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/?p=8580\">announced the name<\/a> of the new STEM-focused Ferdinand T. Day Elementary School Back in February. Here\u2019s an update on what\u2019s been happening since then and what is to come.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/spark.adobe.com\/video\/EAD87O8aJFRhR\/embed\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><i>[If viewing on Firefox please ensure you are using the latest version and that all Adobe plugins are up to date or view using Internet Explorer, Chrome or Safari.]\n<\/i><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve been conducting student focus groups and parent and community meetings, planning for the playground and buying supplies and materials.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve also met with Gwen Fuller, Mr. Day\u2019s daughter, and his longtime friend Jim Henson to discuss the character traits that we\u2019d like students to exemplify based on the school\u2019s namesake and his contributions to Alexandria. They have also shared stories from Mr. Day\u2019s life that can be incorporated into the spirit and design of the school. And, we\u2019ve been hiring the critical staff needed to open the school and are currently staffed at 90 percent.<\/p>\n<p>In the coming months, in addition to working on the building &#8211;\u00a0including the interior design and playground development &#8211; we\u2019ll also be refining the aspects of the school that will bring it to life, such as the mission, vision, culture and environment. And, we\u2019ll hire remaining staff, hold more parent and community meetings and much more as we work hard toward opening this fall.<\/p>\n<h3>After School Options and Transportation This Fall<\/h3>\n<p>For the 2018-19 school year, Ferdinand T. Day students will have the option of attending Campanga Kids or Alexandria Department of Parks and Recreation after school programs at John Adams or William Ramsay elementary schools. Letters regarding transportation will be sent out soon.<\/p>\n<h3>Parent and Community Meetings<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019d like to stay current on happenings with the new school, please join us at an upcoming parent and community meeting where we will share information, gather input and answer questions.<\/p>\n<p>All meetings will be held at the Morgan Center Pavilion\/Mark Center Community Center at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/5708+Merton+Ct,+Alexandria,+VA+22311\/@38.8292375,-77.1297585,17z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x89b7b3b8b601cf13:0x976456298d9e9900!8m2!3d38.8292375!4d-77.1275645\">5708 Merton Court<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Monday, May 21, 6-8 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>Tuesday, May 22, 8-10 a.m.<\/li>\n<li>Thursday, June 14, 6-8 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>Friday, June 15, 8-10 a.m.<\/li>\n<li>Thursday, Aug. 9, 6-8 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Bottle Cap Collection for School Mosaic Art<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019d like to contribute to the new school in a fun an easy way, you can contribute to our bottle cap collection drive. We\u2019re collecting caps from milk and juice containers and water bottles to be used in a community art project to create a mosaic for the new school. Caps can be dropped off at John Adams, James K.
