{"id":8189,"date":"2018-01-21T21:10:23","date_gmt":"2018-01-22T02:10:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/?p=8189"},"modified":"2018-06-20T12:43:07","modified_gmt":"2018-06-20T16:43:07","slug":"six-athletes-inducted-acps-hall-fame","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/?p=8189","title":{"rendered":"Glittering Ceremony Sees Six Athletes Inducted into Hall of Fame"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Alexandria City Public Schools inducted six outstanding athletes into the Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday night, including a pioneer in women\u2019s athletics who attended a segregated school and went on to become an ACPS principal of two integrated schools, a 37-year record holder in the two-mile run and an oarsman who became a decorated veteran and commander of the Navy\u2019s legendary Blue Angels.<em><br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nThe Hall of Fame, now in its fourth year, also honored two highly regarded basketball coaches in a festive ceremony featuring a T.C. Williams quartet, trumpeters and cheerleaders. Francis C. Hammond Middle School choral students sang the national anthem and the saber-bearing JROTC cadets and color guard launched the induction ceremony.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/L8NZNJAG2CE\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8197\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8197\" class=\"wp-image-8197\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Michael-Horton-260x352.jpg\" alt=\"Michael Horton\" width=\"150\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Michael-Horton-260x352.jpg 260w, http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Michael-Horton-74x100.jpg 74w, http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Michael-Horton.jpg 368w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8197\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michael Horton<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This year\u2019s inductees include <strong>Michael Horton<\/strong>, a basketball player who scored over 1,600 points during his career on the T.C. Williams team and graduated as the school\u2019s all-time leading scorer. He was honored as a first team all-state selection his senior year, was named to the All-Northern Region Team twice, and was selected to three all-district teams. Horton began his college career at Alleghany Community College, where he was the top-rated point guard in the U.S. He went on to play basketball for the University of Cincinnati, the preseason top-ranked collegiate team in the nation. After college, he returned to Alexandria and pursued a career with ACPS.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8200\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8200\" class=\"wp-image-8200\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ardelia-Hunter.png\" alt=\"Ardelia Hunter\" width=\"150\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ardelia-Hunter.png 211w, http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ardelia-Hunter-93x100.png 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8200\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ardelia Hunter<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Ardelia Hunter <\/strong>was a pioneer in women\u2019s high school athletics and was a star on the Parker-Gray women\u2019s basketball team. After college she returned to Alexandria, where she served the City\u2019s youth for 34 years, beginning as an ACPS elementary school teacher and rising to become an assistant principal and then principal. She earned a master\u2019s degree in elementary education from Virginia State College along the way. While Hunter is honored for her athletic skills at Parker-Gray\u2014a segregated school\u2014she is also esteemed for overcoming barriers and ultimately serving as the principal of two integrated schools.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8196\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8196\" class=\"wp-image-8196\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ron-Lambert-260x270.jpg\" alt=\"Ron Lambert\" width=\"150\" height=\"156\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ron-Lambert-260x270.jpg 260w, http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ron-Lambert-96x100.jpg 96w, http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ron-Lambert.jpg 489w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8196\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ron Lambert<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Ron Lambert<\/strong> was an all-around athlete who lettered in four sports in his senior year. Lambert played varsity basketball for three seasons and was named first-team all state his senior year. He was also captain of the football team, where he was an all-district selection as a receiver and defensive end and played basketball, baseball and track. Lambert attended Memphis State University on a football scholarship and also played on the Memphis State basketball team. He then transferred to Rio Grande University, where he was a three-time, all-conference selectee in basketball and was named to the All-America Team in 1974. He was inducted into the Rio Grande University Hall of Fame in 1992.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8199\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8199\" class=\"wp-image-8199\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Daymond-Jackson.png\" alt=\"Daymond Jackson\" width=\"150\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Daymond-Jackson.png 182w, http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Daymond-Jackson-83x100.png 83w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8199\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Daymond Jackson<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Daymond Jackson<\/strong> was a first team all-met and first team all-state selection in 1995 and graduated as the second leading scorer in T.C. Williams\u2019 basketball history. As a senior he averaged 28.5 points per game and was selected as the Basketball Player of the Year by the Alexandria Sportsman\u2019s Club. Jackson also excelled in track, placing third in the region in 1995 for the high jump. Upon graduating from T.C. Williams, he went on to a stellar four-year collegiate career playing basketball for John Thompson\u2019s Georgetown Hoyas.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8198\" style=\"width: 159px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8198\" class=\"wp-image-8198\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Dwight-Stephens.png\" alt=\"Dwight Stephens\" width=\"149\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Dwight-Stephens.png 170w, http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Dwight-Stephens-78x100.png 78w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 149px) 100vw, 149px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8198\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dwight Stephens<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Dwight Stephens<\/strong> was one of a long line of great T.C. Williams\u2019 distance runners. He completely dominated Virginia high school distance running his senior year. In an unprecedented sweep, he won the 1979 Northern Region and Virginia cross-country titles, the 1980 state indoor title at 3200 meters, and the 1980 state outdoor title at 3200 meters. In the Northern Region cross-country championship, he ran the fourth fastest time in the history of the famous Burke Lake course and set a record in the two-mile run at the state outdoor track and field championships that has stood for 37 years. After T.C. Williams, Stephens went on to a successful collegiate career at Pennsylvania State University.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8195\" style=\"width: 159px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8195\" class=\"wp-image-8195\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bob-Stumpf-260x335.jpg\" alt=\"Bob Stumpf\" width=\"149\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bob-Stumpf-260x335.jpg 260w, http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bob-Stumpf-78x100.jpg 78w, http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bob-Stumpf.jpg 324w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 149px) 100vw, 149px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8195\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bob Stumpf<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Bob Stumpf <\/strong>was a three-year varsity\u00a0oarsman\u00a0and a two-way starter and co-captain of the 1969 Northern Virginia champion football team. During his sophomore and senior years, he was in boats that won the prestigious Stotesbury Cup. As captain of the crew team in his senior year he also won the U.S. National Championship. Bob went on to row at the U.S. Naval Academy, where he earned a gold medal at the Eastern Sprints and a bronze medal at the 1971 National Collegiate Championships. Following graduation, Bob launched a 23-year career as a naval aviator. He flew 22 combat missions during Operation Desert Storm and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism. He later commanded the Navy\u2019s legendary Blue Angels flight demonstration squadron.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8201\" style=\"width: 148px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8201\" class=\" wp-image-8201\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jimmy-Worden.png\" alt=\"Jimmy Worden\" width=\"138\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jimmy-Worden.png 182w, http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jimmy-Worden-82x100.png 82w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 138px) 100vw, 138px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8201\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jimmy Worden<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_8202\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8202\" class=\"wp-image-8202\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Albert-E-Ratsy-Doran.png\" alt=\"Albert E Ratsy Doran\" width=\"150\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Albert-E-Ratsy-Doran.png 202w, http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Albert-E-Ratsy-Doran-89x100.png 89w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8202\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Albert E (Ratsy) Doran<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In addition to the six athletes, the Hall of Fame honored\u00a0two coaches: <strong>Albert E. (Ratsy) Doran<\/strong> mentored Alexandria athletes from 1938 until he retired in 1970. He began his career coaching basketball, football, track and baseball and served as George Washington\u2019s first director of athletics. In 1953, he was named supervisor of athletics for ACPS, a position he held until he retired. He was inducted into the Washington Metropolitan Basketball Hall of Fame in 1984 and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. <strong>Jimmy Worden<\/strong>, a native Alexandrian who led the T.C. Williams boys varsity team to five district titles and the girls varsity team to a district tournament title.
