This September, our community marks the 101st anniversary of Parker-Gray School, which provided Black children the opportunity of education at a time when segregation threatened what is now recognized as a fundamental right of every child.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This event is possible thanks to the Founder of the Alexandria African American Hall of Fame, Robert N. Dawkins. As the 100th Anniversary of the Parker-Gray School was approaching last year, Mr. Dawkins, alongside Alexandria African American Hall of Fame Chairman Julian Haley, Jr., initiated a brick project titled \u2018Paving Our History: The Parker-Gray Memorial Walkway\u2019 to honor the legacy of Parker-Gray School.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 101st anniversary celebration and new signage at the site are a testament to the power of education and the spirit of the school\u2019s alumni and adds a critical chapter to Alexandria\u2019s African American history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please join in the celebration of the anniversary of this vital institution in the City of Alexandria at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/acpsk12.zoom.us\/j\/99104856340?pwd=NDlXako1Q2ZxZTFsUjhGV21oS25VUT09\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Join us on Zoom for the virtual event<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Constitution Week aims to emphasize citizens\u2019 responsibilities to protect the U.S. Constitution, educate people about the role of the U.S. Constitution and encourage the study of historical events leading to the drafting of the U.S. Constitution in September 1787.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students from the Alexandria City High School Jr. ROTC and Choir will participate in the signing, as well as Fifer David Embrey and Bell Ringer Jane Ring. ACPS staff and School Board members will also be attending.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proclamation signing is open to the public and no sign up is required. The event will be live-streamed and will also be available on YouTube.
