We have been through a lot together this year and 12 months ago, it was impossible to imagine the road that lies ahead of us. Now that our school buildings have finally reopened, we look forward with great positivity, yet we remain aware of the work that still has to be done with regards to the social, emotional and academic learning needs of our young people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I want to reiterate to staff and families a strong discouragement of non-essential travel over Spring Break (March 27-April 2) and ask everyone to please abide by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) health guidelines explained in previous ACPS communications. After review of community transmission metrics, ACPS has informed families that all students will transition to virtual learning for the week after Spring Break, April 5-9, and we will resume hybrid learning on Tuesday, April 13.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we round out Women\u2019s History Month, please be sure to check out our librarians\u2019 recommendations of books across all grade levels that tell stories that support this mission. I can think of no better way to spend the next week than by relaxing with a few books. Williams High School and Matthew Maury Elementary School.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two community members spoke during the public hearing in support of naming the school after Naomi Brooks. Michele Chapman commented, &#8220;I&#8217;ve had the pleasure of knowing Naomi Brooks for more than 25 years, and this honor is most deserving. It was not easy to go to school or to teach in school in her day, but she handled it with grace and dignity.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rev. Dr. Howard-John Wesley, pastor of Alexandria\u2019s Alfred Street Baptist Church, also praised naming the school after Naomi Brooks, a former member of the church. He said, &#8220;She modeled a balanced life, as a businesswoman, as a civic and social leader, as a faithful life, and even as an educator all rolled up into one. Her record on education speaks for itself, not only as an educator who served our city, but as a mother who was active and involved, as a student who was raised through the Alexandria public schools system, as an athlete.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Superintendent Dr. Hutchings made recommendations at the Feb. 26 Board Meeting based on the results of public polls. His recommendations were Alexandria High School for T.C. Williams and Naomi Brooks Elementary School for Maury. These benefits have been extended through the end of the 2020-21 school year for <\/span><b>students approved for free or reduced-price meals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and\/or <\/span><b>attend a Community Eligibility Provision school (Cora Kelly and William Ramsay).<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We want to make sure that every family that qualifies for P-EBT knows how to apply for and access this valuable benefit that can be used to purchase groceries anywhere that SNAP is accepted.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Already have a card?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Additional funds will automatically be loaded to your existing card soon.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lost your card or never received one?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Please call 1-866-281-2448. <\/span><b>ACPS does not distribute P-EBT cards or benefits.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Applied for Free and Reduced Price Meals?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you completed the application for Free and Reduced-Price Meals and received a letter or email stating your application was approved, no further action is necessary. ACPS has a Homeless Education Liaison responsible for ensuring that children experiencing homelessness are identified, enrolled and receive equitable access to high quality education and support services.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone, due to a lack of housing, can be considered homeless if he or she lives in inadequate or temporary settings such as: emergency or transitional shelters; motels, hotels, trailer parks, campgrounds, or abandoned in hospitals, living in cars, parks, public places, bus or train stations, or abandoned buildings; or doubled up with relatives or friends; or those living in these conditions and who are migratory children or youth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students experiencing homelessness:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can stay in the same school even if the family moves, and receive transportation to that school, as long as it is in the student\u2019s best interest.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">May enroll in school immediately without the documents schools usually require.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Receive free school meals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get help with school supplies and other needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ACPS Homeless Education Liaison Program (HELP) can:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide extra support for youth who are on their own.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help connect young children with early childhood services.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For assistance, please reach out to:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhaea Goff, LCSW<br \/>\nHomeless Education and Foster Care Liaison<br \/>\n<a href=\"mailto:homelesseducation@acps.k12.va.us\">homelesseducation@acps.k12.va.us<br \/>\n<\/a>703-619-8034<br \/>\nWebsite: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/homeless\">www.acps.k12.va.us\/homeless<\/a>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"food\" name=\"food\"><\/a>FOOD ACCESS<\/h2>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\">ACPS has multiple distribution meal site locations throughout Alexandria for all ACPS students and children over the age of two. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/schoolclosurefood\">See a map and list of food distribution locations and times<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Spring Break Food Distribution<\/strong><br \/>\nDuring Spring Break, March 29-April 2, only the following food distribution locations will be operating:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">T.C. Williams High School<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Francis C. Hammond Middle School<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grab and Go meals will be available at these sites on Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 7:30 a.m. and noon. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There will be no pop-up site distribution during Spring Break.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>April 5 Food Distribution<\/strong><br \/>\nMonday, April 5 is a Teacher Work Day and there is no school for students.
