Studies have repeatedly proven the importance of summer reading for retaining reading skills. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study by James Kim of the Harvard Graduate School of Education found that<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/scholar.harvard.edu\/files\/jameskim\/files\/2004_ms1583-summerreading-edited_website.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reading four to five books<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the summer was sufficient to prevent a decline in reading achievement scores from the spring to the fall. This U.S. Department of Education \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ed.gov\/2011\/08\/why-summer-reading-pays-off-year-round\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summer Reading Pays Off Year Round<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d article further validates the power of summer reading. See below for our ACPS Summer Reading Programs:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Rising PreK-5<\/b><b>th<\/b><b> Grade Summer Reading Program:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All rising K-5 students are asked to complete the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/alexlibraryva.org\/summerquest\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SummerQuest summer reading program<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coordinated through the Alexandria Library. Students earn 1 point for every 20 minutes of reading or points for attending library programs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The program emphasizes personalized book choice. Once students accumulate 30 points, they can choose a free prize book.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rising 1st-5th grade students can record their books on a piece of paper (download the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/cms\/lib\/VA01918616\/Centricity\/Domain\/1126\/SummerQuest2019PaperLog.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SummerQuest Paper Log (PDF)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), or enter the books online using the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/alexandria.beanstack.org\/reader365\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beanstack<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tool; rising preschool and kindergarten students complete an activity sheet.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Rising 6<\/b><b>th<\/b><b>-8<\/b><b>th<\/b><b> Grade Summer Reading Program:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>NEW FOR 2019-20<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: ACPS recommends that ALL rising middle school students who are enrolled in <\/span><b>Grades 6-8 English<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for 2019-20 <\/span><b>read two (2) books over the summer and respond<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to each book with one of the 18 listed Reading Responses on the Summer Reading Project. Completion of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/cms\/lib\/VA01918616\/Centricity\/Domain\/1126\/19-20MiddleSchoolOptionalSummerReadingProjectAssignmentComplete.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summer Reading Project (PDF)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will earn students extra credit in their first quarter of English.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Books will be made available to students who may not have access to them over the summer through their English teacher<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Directions, support documents, and resources (including the 18 Reading Responses options) are available on both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/Page\/2233\">school and ACPS websites<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Rising 9<\/b><b>th<\/b><b>-12<\/b><b>th<\/b><b> Grade Summer Reading Program:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All rising 9<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-12<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> students are asked to <\/span><b>read 4 or more books<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this summer. Students are encouraged to use the Alexandria City Libraries\u2019 SummerQuest challenge <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/alexlibraryva.org\/summerquest\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA Universe of Stories\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by enrolling in the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/alexandria.beanstack.org\/reader365\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beanstack website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to track their reading progress and earn virtual badges. Students earn 1 point for every 20 minutes of reading and will receive a prize once they reach 30 points. Students can keep track on paper using the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acps.k12.va.us\/cms\/lib\/VA01918616\/Centricity\/Domain\/1126\/TeenSRBookmark2019.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summer Reading Bookmark (PDF)<\/span><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students are also encouraged to enter the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/alexlibraryva.org\/floc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor Love of Country Essay and Poetry Contest\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sponsored by the Alexandria Library for prizes and points.
