{"id":13540,"date":"2019-06-02T20:06:24","date_gmt":"2019-06-03T00:06:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/?p=13540"},"modified":"2019-06-20T13:18:37","modified_gmt":"2019-06-20T17:18:37","slug":"acps-student-bees-knees-at-historic-national-spelling-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/?p=13540","title":{"rendered":"ACPS Student Bee\u2019s Knees at Historic National Spelling Contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Alexandria had its first participant in the Scripps National Spelling Bee this past week.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Maury Elementary School fourth grader Olivia Coleman participated in the 92nd annual contest, making it through to round 2.<\/p>\n<p>Bee Week 2019 was one for the record books. Finalists battled it out in 20 nail-biting rounds broadcast live on ESPN Thursday evening. Unable to trip the final eight spellers, organizers announced an eight-way tie as they had run out of challenging words. Each winner went home with a $50,000 prize.<\/p>\n<p>Five hundred sixty two spellers ranging from age 7-15 (grades 1-8) from all 50 states swarmed the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor in Maryland during the week.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13549\" style=\"width: 424px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13549\" class=\"wp-image-13549 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/image1-1-414x600.jpeg\" alt=\"Olivia Coleman at the National Spelling Bee\" width=\"414\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/image1-1-414x600.jpeg 414w, http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/image1-1-69x100.jpeg 69w, http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/image1-1-248x360.jpeg 248w, http:\/\/www.acpsk12.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/image1-1.jpeg 670w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 414px) 100vw, 414px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13549\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Mark Bowen\/Scripps National Spelling Bee)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Although Olivia didn\u2019t make it to the finals, she survived the first round, spelling \u201chistrionics\u201d only to get stung in the second round with \u201cvermilion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How does one prepare to spell every word in a dictionary? So reading is a good way to prepare,\u201d Olivia said. \u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But running across words like omphalopsychite and auftaktigkeit \u2014 words that appeared in the bee finals \u2014 really don\u2019t appear in your everyday books. How did Olivia focus on those tough ones?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>I used the study material provided and I used different websites and apps. I studied a lot by myself and with my daddy. I practiced until I got the words right,\u201d Olivia said.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Spelling obscure words is hard enough, but spelling in front of crowd, in front of peers, judges and parents is a lot of pressure.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I was nervous about getting my word wrong but I was also excited because if I got my word right, I could get farther. Olivia participated in Maury\u2019s first spelling bee and won. She then moved on through to a city spelling bee, winning for all fourth graders and then went on to compete at regionals. Although she didn\u2019t win, she was able to RSVBee and landed a spot in the National Spelling Bee.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I made some new friends from different places. It was a great experience for me.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Olivia has dual citizenship with Brazil and speaks fluent Portuguese. Maybe knowing a second language at a young age has something to do with getting her knack for spelling. Some of the spellers have made second appearances at the annual competition, with two coming back for their fifth try. Maybe we will see Olivia up there again next year!<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations on your making it to your first National Spelling Bee, Olivia!
